Starbuckpga
Man I can't decide. What do you guys think I should do for a processor? The Intel i7 or the Xeon 5500? I can't make up my mind on what I want to do. Sure the i7 is a couple hundred cheaper, but is it worth the money to get the Xeon 5500 series processor? Might do a little gaming, like Call of Duty when it comes out this fall. Some video editing. So am I thinking the Xeon might be a little over kill for it? I know the i7 will handle all that easily, but I like the idea of the Xeon processors. Any advice appreciated. Also anyone suggest or recommend a solid board? How about the P55? The Xeon 55xx series are crazy expensive compared to the i7. The comparable Xeon to the i7 920 is the Xeon 5550 (2.66 GHz) and that cpu alone goes for just under $1k on newegg. You could build an entire i7 rig for that kind of money. Plus, with the Xeon you are going to need to buy a server grade motherboard and possibly ram. At that point you are definitely going to be out into "on your own" territory as far as figuring out what it takes to get OS X installed and getting your hardware working. Plus with the cost associated with it (especially if you had dual Quad cpus in mind), you might as well just buy a Mac Pro. I would go i7 as there are lots of folks running those rigs so you would have a far larger support group to assist you with getting it up and running. Broken, Thanks for the reply and that's what I am thinking. I did see you were from Cincinnati, OH. I actually live in Northern Kentucky, but work in Cincinnati of course. Good to see a fellow neighbor on here. As far as the board, any ideas? I have seen some issues with getting the NIC to work and sound? Am I able to avoid this with a certain kind of board? Was looking at the Gigabyte P55, but was not sure yet. Thanks again! I think they are 1156 pin and only support the brand new i5 cpu's. Those are new to the market, so not going to be much info out there in regards to getting OS X running on them. Probably want to look at one of the X58 chipset Gigabyte boards for i7 support. The HCL on the wiki should have several listed.
