following on from doing the above (master HD, slave DVD drive) - i discovered that it was maybe the way the drive was partitioned/formatted pre-hardware changes & pre-install osx from dvd that maybe was making this happen.

You will need the computer you are trying to install osx on to already have xp installed on another drive.

A copy of the xp install cd.

Hardware i used:

Asus p5p800s mobo

Pioneer 115D dvdrw - ide

IBM Deskstar 30gb - ide (for osx)

Seagate barracuda with XP already on it.

Onboard lan, ac97 audio, Geforce MX 5200 video card.

I discovered the following fix - i have the osx drive on a seperate ide cable but i dual boot into XP using my drive on other ide cable. This is done from a tower button reset and by choosing the 1st boot device in the bios.

Boot into windows & go to my computer and make sure the drive you want to install osx on is recognized.

Next, right click on my computer and choose - manage & disk mangement. You should see the empty drive listed - highlight it and click on 'delete partition'.

Shut down windows.

Boot up from the cdrom (do this in the bios) with the xp install cd (i opened up the tower and disconnected the drives i didnt want to delete by accident before i did this!)

After xp installs the drivers you accept the agreement and a screen comes up checking which drive you want to install to but you have to create a new partition (do this).

After you have done this you are given the option to quit/exit from the installation. do this and it will reboot.

At this point then try the osx installtion sequence by booting up from the cdrom & see if it works.

I dont know the ins and outs of what i did and yes there may be an easier way to do this without using xp / xp install cd but it worked for me and now i have a working osx with a working video card using NATIT_gfnvidia, ac97 sound, ethernet. -

the only problem now is trying to get one of my wifi usb dongles to work. i have the following at hand.

Belkin Wireless G 54Mbps USB Network Adapter/Dongle - F5D7051

Sweex wireless lan LW053

Netgear WG111v3

;)
