MikoMew Posted August 17, 2009 Share Posted August 17, 2009 So like I have some programs like Voc@loid, windows version of MSN messenger I want to use is there a way where i could like running Mac OS and just have those specific programs out instead of using a parallel which drains more battery so my friends say. retromacg3 Posted August 17, 2009 Share Posted August 17, 2009 I use VMWARE Fusion, but I will be trying Darwine windows "Emulator" for Mac OSX (Intel only, Tiger or Leopard) http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/ Or install MacPorts, which lets you run Linux applications, and then install the latest "Wine" release, since Darwine doesn't seem very updated. Google Macports/Wine, as my cut and paste function is not working for some reason (never had this issue before!) retromacg3 Posted August 18, 2009 Share Posted August 18, 2009 I don't really know what you mean, but with VMWARE/Parallels, yes, you need to have Windows running. With Wine (and I assume Darwine), you don't, it just loads the components it needs (MS DLL's, parts of the Kernel, etc). Then you just associate your windows application to run with Wine in the Mac dialog box that comes up, and it supposedly just works. Not everything will work mind you. If you have Crossover, you don't need the free Wine / Darwine. It also has nothing to do with complexity, per se. If the program is written well and happens to use APIs that are well supported under Wine, things will work. I run Multisim, AutoCAD and occasionally IDA Pro under Darwine. They all work great, and are all certainly complex programs. I've had small programs (keygens and things) that don't work under Wine. <shrug> Luck of the draw, if you like.
