nickve
Hello all, I am a current Windows user, however I have been planning to make the switch to Mac for a fairly long time now. I'm a Film student on a tight budget and I would love some input on the list of hardware I have put together. I don't have much knowledge about computer hardware so all of your input is VERY appreciated. I will be using this computer for video editing and gaming on ocassion. I plan on installing more space once I recieve more funds. I don't know much about hackintosh hardware restrictions and compatability so please forgive my inexperience and lack of knowledge. I based the following hardware on http://leopardsoup.pbworks.com/recipes_editing. I will not be installing this hardware myself, I have experienced friends that will be there to assist me. Zaap
That'll work great. The UD3P is one of the most popular boards for OSx86, and the best-known guide for setting it up is on the same site you linked to. (See link in sig). The Q9550 is one of the best-bang-for-buck processors around- very good for an editing system. The only glaring thing I'd say is the overkill 850W PSU. A good quality 500 to 600W PSU will run that spec just fine- since you're on a tight budget no sense paying for power you're not even using. IE: something like this, or this. (I'd recommend a modular design as well to keep your rig from being over-stuffed with cabling.) For about $10 more per 4GB pair, I'd recommend getting this 1066Mhz RAM vs the 800Mhz. I have 8GB of this in my main system and highly recommend it. TomCom
That's a pretty decent Hackintosh you'd have here (look at my sig, I've got the same), but since you're bulding it from scratch, if I were you I would look for a Core i7 rig. The price premium is not that high anymore, maybe 100-150$. Core 2 architecture with DDR2 is almost obsolete and there's a big difference with Core i7 for Final Cut and other pro apps, thanks to hyperthreading which basically emulates 8 cores. For a "prosumer" use like yours, it would be a far better investment. Do yourself a favor, read some benches. If you really don't have more money to spend, a Q9550 will be fine for a while, though, and weaksauce's step-by-step guide for the UD3P motherboard is just perfect. Anyone who can read would be able to install Mas OS X oneself, at least with a Nvidia VGA card. BTW, don't buy an AC Freezer and thermal compound seperately, get a Scythe Mugen 2, which comes with a very decent thermal grease. It's the best cooler in town (for just 40$) and it will be much more silent than the Freezer with its fan squeezing at 2500RPM. And yes, it's huge but fits in CM 690. Just checked for you. My pleasure. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/179181-will-hackintosh-work-with-this-recipe/#findComment-1222604 Share on other sites
nickve
Thanks for the information! Right now I'm looking at the Gigabyte EX58-UD5 ATX Motherboard and the Core i7 920 and I was wondering if there are any other cheaper motherboards that are compatible with i7 processors and hackintosh? Do you have any recomendations on DDR3 memory? It looks like if I go the i7 route I will only be able to afford 4-6 GB. Thanks, Nick Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/179181-will-hackintosh-work-with-this-recipe/#findComment-1222640 Share on other sites
Kahley
Hey you talked about the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P. Do you know where to find this Motherboard? I found it in several stores, but I was always told that they cant deliver it. TomCom
Sadly, it's not produced anymore. The P55 mobos are coming next month… @ Nickve: the EX58-UD4P is the most sensible choice to me, with at least 6GB of memory. These OCZ aren't pretty but who cares, because their specs are great (1600MHz CAS 7) for 110$: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820227381 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/179181-will-hackintosh-work-with-this-recipe/#findComment-1222848 Share on other sites
nickve
Do you also have any recomendations for a GPU to go with the EX58-UD4P? My budget is around $100. My budget is around $100.Nick For $100, your best bet would probably be a Nvidia 9800GT. I know if I was going to replace my 9500GT and had $100 to spend on it, a 9800GT would pretty much be at the top of the list.
