Lately, I seem to be having issues with OS X. I cannot for the life of me figure out what would cause this, its such an odd error.

All of my desktop icons have disappeared. If that wasn't enough, I cannot right-click on the desktop to bring up the contextual menu either. To REALLY make matters worse, the whole "View" option in Finder is greyed out. And if the problems would stop there, I'd be happy. It also appears as though I cannot open "System Preferences> Desktop & Screen Saver" preference panel. And my desktop picture has changed to a standard blue wallpaper. The whole computer functions flawlessly other than this. (OS X 10.5.7) Finder works just fine.

Getting frustrated, I opened my home folder. It appears as though the desktop icons are still in my home folder's "Desktop" folder. And they are quite usable once I'm inside there. They just don't show on the desktop.

The really odd part? If I bring up the Force Quit window (Cmd+Opt+Esc) and relaunch Finder, they come back and everything starts working properly! Even my desktop wallpaper changes back to what it should be! Thinking I had the problem solved, I rebooted the machine. Guess what? Same problem...

I repaired permissions in Disk Utility. It found a few errors, none pertaining to Finder. I then rebooted the machine to my 10.5 install disk and repaired permissions from the install disk. It found a few more errors, again none pertaining to Finder. I then rebooted to single-user mode and ran AppleJack. I used AppleJack -a to run all the troubleshooting options (repair disks, repair permissions, clean caches, validate preference files, and remove swap files). When I finally got back into X, I found the problem still there. :(

So I trashed the Finder preference file, and rebooted. No go. Then I opened /System/Library/ and trashed "Extensions.mkext" to reset the extensions preferences. Again, no go.

I googled around and found a few "fixes" that didn't pertain to me. I don't have Stuffit in System Preferences. My home folder hasn't been renamed, nor has the "Desktop" folder in my home folder. I never have a second monitor hooked up to my Mac, so the icons aren't "hiding" and I cannot do "Clean Up Selection" because that whole menu option in Finder is greyed out. But if I relaunch Finder after booting into X, everything starts working properly. I'm stumped, someone want to give me a hint?

I actually do have this same problem but i never did an update. This is happening on a fresh install. I have also googled and searched these forums and you are the only person with the same problem as far as i know.

Hope someone out there has a fix.
