hahler2 Posted July 24, 2009 Share Posted July 24, 2009 Ok I've done a lot of searching and reading on this site and through google, and I'm still having trouble understanding all this stuff. I've got a retail copy of OS X. I'm running a Gigabyte EP43-DS3L board and a EVGA 9800 GTX+ video card. It sounds like from the guides that I've looked at that it will be do able to install OSX retail on this machine, but I'm just not sure. What all do I need to do and how hard will this be to make work properly? I apologize if this has been covered previously but I tried searching and came up with so many different results and guides that I just wasn't sure what is the right way to do this. I will not be dual booting. If I want to run Windows I'll shell out for a copy of Parellels. Here is a rough over view of what U need to do. -Boot Grub-dfe (search for grub dfe) -boot OS X retail -format HD GUID (using disk tools, partition, options) -install -boot grub-dfe -point to install (80) -create account -install update -boot grub-dfe(with -v so U can see when update install) -boot grub-dfe again -boot updated OS -install Chameleon 2 (search for Chameleon OSx86) -copy grub-dfe files (buried in a disk image on the CD, dsmos.kext, IntelCPUPMDdisabler.kext & SMBIOS.kext) over to Chameleon Extras/Extensions -Should be able to boot freestanding. Once you've got that, then you start working on drivers specific to your hardware. If this doesn't have enough detail then search for EP45-UD3R, on this site, you'll find a guide or two with greater detail. hahler2 Posted July 24, 2009 Author Share Posted July 24, 2009 Thanks for the help. I was definitely on information overload. I saw the guide for the EP45. I just didn't realize that that guide would work for the EP43 also. Once I get things up and running where do I find the information for installing system drivers? I saw the guide on getting the 9800 GTX working in Leopard, but it kept talking about installing strings and different kexts to get it working and I have no idea what they are talking about. Khan_Man Posted July 25, 2009 Share Posted July 25, 2009 PCwiz has some utilities for doing kext installing and generating strings. strings are a string of number that go into the Boot.plist (in the /Extra folder). They pass specific info about your hardware to the operating system. You can use OSx86 tools or UIinstaller (both pcwiz utilies). There are a few other utilities for doing this if U want. kext are system drivers that go into the /System/Library/Extensions folder or in the /Extra/Extensions folder. For putting in /S/L/E/ I use b7kexthelper or OSx86 tools or UIinstaller. If the kext is going into the Extra/Extensions folder U just drag and drop them in.
