ant13
I am looking to build a new computer that will dual boot Windows and Mac without too many compatibility issues. I currently have an XPS M1530 that does not shut down (hard shutdown). Would it be the same for this? Is it because of the motherboard or the GPU? Here is what I have chosen. CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Motherboard: ASUS Rampage Extreme LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard with Creative Audio GPU: Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card RAM: PNY Optima 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Case: NZXT Tempest Power Supply: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Optical Drive: LG Blu-ray Burner Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive If there are any compatibility issues I would like to hear your suggestions. Zaap
Keep in mind the main consideration is always the motherboard, followed by the graphic card. Most other components are generally platform independent. To my knowledge, that motherboard will work- though it wouldn't be my first choice for a Hackintosh, personally. Check the HCL wiki for others using the same board, and hopefully links to guides to how they set it up. (link in my sig- so I don't have to re-post it 10,000,000 times!) TomCom
First point, an X48 motherboard is useless for OSX86, since you cannot do Crossfire nor SLI. Plus, the sound chip of this Asus may cause trouble. If you have 300$ to spare, you'll get far better perfomances buying a 130$ mobo like mine (or its DDR3 alternative, the EP45T-UD3P) and an SSD (OCZ Vertex, G.Skill Falcon or Intel). Second point, the wattage of such a rig is under 350W on load. A good 500W PSU is all you need. 750W won't run any faster. ant13
My main question is about the graphics card. On the weaksauce12 guide it says that some of the ATI cards require a helping card to get the drivers installed. Do you know if the SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4870 1GB does? Will the DVI to HDMI adapter work? I was unable to tell from the HCL for 10.5.7. Thanks BTW where can I purchase the GA-EP45T-UD3P Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/175255-new-build-for-osx86/#findComment-1204932 Share on other sites

Thanks BTW where can I purchase the GA-EP45T-UD3P You can get the GA-EP45T-UD3P here. $140 DVI to HDMI is broken under 10.5.7 The moment you add that HDMI cable, the monitors preference pane thinks you are connected to a TV and only gives you weird resolutions that may not be your panels native resolution. The cure is to use VGA or DVI instead. You can have a look here for more info and work arounds (27 pages on apple discussions.com) You are aware that BlueRay is not supported on OS X. You might be able to burn a disk, but none of the DRM is supported as HDCP has not been implemented. To quote Steve Jobs "It's a bag of hurt". Yes, I am aware that bluray will not work on mac but will it still burn DVD's? I plan to use the bluray under windows. Zaap
Yes, I am aware that bluray will not work on mac but will it still burn DVD's? I plan to use the bluray under windows. I built a system with an LG blu-ray drive for a friend. It worked great as a DVD burner in OSX- using Toast 10. Toast 9 didn't recognize it.
