mmhardky
My hackintosh based on Gigabyte G31M-ES2L is working flawlesly with 10.5.6 but I urgently need firewire. I would prefer PCI-X as all my PCI slots are blocked by the graphics card. Can I buy anything or are there compatibility issues? Synaesthesia
No you can't just buy anything. Looks like the Delock 89153 is an option - PCI-E too! Some links to research: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...her_Accessories - bottom of the page (look around the other wiki pages too) http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...pic=113132& - Here's where I found out about the Delock 89153 http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=137634 http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=66993 http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=13701 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/173016-what-firewire-card-do-you-got-working-in-your-hackintosh/#findComment-1189190 Share on other sites
mmhardky
Oh, now I see its a little bit complicated with the compatibilty then I thought. Thanks for the reply. TheDelock card is a FW800 and a little bit expensive and not in stock. I have found this DeLOCK 89121, 2x FireWire extern/1x FireWire intern, PCIe x1. Its FW400, cheap and in stock. Hmmm.. Any thoughts? It is not mac certified, but neither is the 89153. Also from what I've read, PCI-X cards should be less of a problem than PCI, meaning there is a better chance it will work. Am I right? I'm a newbie. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/173016-what-firewire-card-do-you-got-working-in-your-hackintosh/#findComment-1189222 Share on other sites
Zaap
Just curious- your graphics card blocks BOTH PCI slots? It must be enormous. PCIx cards don't necessarily work better than PCI for Firewire. In each case, it depends on the chipset of the card being OSX-compatible. In fact, I think PCIx is a bit of a waste for FW 400 since the PCI interface handles it just fine, and PCIx cards tend be be more expensive [and judging by user reviews, crappier]. Here's a list of newegg PCIx FW cards- I'd only trust the models that specifically say they're Mac-compatible, the first being a StarTech for $37. (Lousy one-egg rating also). By comparison, OSX-compatible PCI models are plentiful and dirt cheap. mmhardky
Well, it blocks one ompletely and the other partialy. I believe I could squeeze a PCI card in, but it would bend a little. It is a standard dual slot cooler (MSI 8600 GTS). Hm, now I'm confused, I wanted to buy DeLOCK 89121 tomorow, but it is not certified for OSX. The 89153 is neither but it works. I'm buying the card in austria and none of those fancy cards you listed is aviable here Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/173016-what-firewire-card-do-you-got-working-in-your-hackintosh/#findComment-1189313 Share on other sites
mmhardky
Damn, the 89153 is actualy mac osx certified. I don't know what to buy. It is too expensive and all the cheaper cards are officialy not supported, but that doesn't necessary mean they won't work. How can I check if my system sees the PCI ports? I can buy stuff from belkin, digitus, delock. dawincontrol and thats basicaly it... Zaap
According to this, the Delock 89121 works with OSX. Click on model 89121 at the top. The specs say: requires Windows Vista, XP, 2000, 2003, Mac OS X or Linux (2.6.x or higher) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/173016-what-firewire-card-do-you-got-working-in-your-hackintosh/#findComment-1189414 Share on other sites
bc909
I don't know if this helps you much but I am running a Syba SD-FWB-32B on a Gigabyte board. I just plugged it in the PCI slot and it showed up natively in both my Vanilla install and my iDeneb 10.5.5 install. I got my card for about $10 less at Freys, but it's the same card. So at least you know this one will work. I don't know of a diagnostic through the OS on the PCI ports other than trying the port. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16815124026 Damn, the 89153 is actualy mac osx certified. mmhardky
Ok, I took the risk and bought the card Delock 89121. Even though the official site and package don't say anything about mac compatibility, it WORKS like a charm!!! Delock 89121 - works on 10.5.6 - without any patches It's a 3x firewire (2x extern, 1x intern) PCI-E card with TI chipset. BuXb
The Delock 89121 seems only available in Europe. Apart from that, I suggest never to buy a mere FW400 card, if one has to buy one. The double-speed FW800 only costs a few bucks more. It is really not worth saving these few bucks, looking at the more-of-speed you get. If you do not yet have a FW800 HD, you have the option to get one in the futrue. From reading and researching, if you live in the US I suggest (prices from NewEgg): PCI: SYBA SD-FWB ($37) or StarTech PCI1394B ($43) PCIe: SYBA Low Profile SD-PEX30009 or StarTech PEX1394B3 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/173016-what-firewire-card-do-you-got-working-in-your-hackintosh/#findComment-1238490 Share on other sites
