Since I am unable to boot my retail mac DVD, I want to try restoring the retail mac DVD or copying it somehow to a partition on my only hard disk.

Might someone know how to do that?

I created an iso of the DVD and tried doing the restore to a FAT partition. It gives a restore failure and "Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore". I scanned the image for restore but it says "Unable to scan Mac OS X Install DVD.iso" (Invalid Argument)

Any ideas?

I tried erasing that partition to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but after erasing, it cannot be mounted.

I used gparted to format the partition as HFS+, but Mac would not mount it.

Someone, help!

Thanks!

i used a chinese software called leopard hd install helper to transfer the image over to a fat32 partition.

however, i am still unable to boot the install image. :)

i then tried using a chameleon boot cd to boot retail. it managed to detect the dvd [finally!] but i got stuck on a "still waiting for root device"

ahh i'm dying from all the retrying... will only be trying again next weekend.

i'm continuing here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...p;#entry1177221

I have been working on doing the same... this is my first hack install. I have a macbook pro, but I want to make my old pc more useful. Its a P4 2.2, so I'm using voodoo kernel. So far, Ive got somewhat of a boot, its hanging at the line starting dsmos.kext or whatever...

Heres how I got this far:

1. Used Live Parted CD to partition drive into two partitions, large one for os x first, then second one around 9 gigs for os x retail dvd. IMPORTANT: Make sure you first change the partition table type to gpt. Then create the two partitions as HFS+.

2. IMPORTANT: Booted into a live cd of knoppix linux. Downloaded the gptsync package and installed it (http://packages.debian.org/sid/gptsync). Execute in terminal "sudo gptsync /dev/MACHDHERE". This syncs the MBR to the GPT table just as refit on a real mac would... I don't believe that the install would work without this step... this essential creates the hybrid gpt/mbr disk that bootcamp would...

3. I already had the os x install dvd written to a hfs+ partition on an external usb HD via disk utility from my real mac. You would need some way to mount the lep dmg in linux if you dont have a real mac. I believe there is a tool dmg2img or something that may work.

4. Plug in the ext usb HD with lep retail dvd files. Mount up both partitions, I believe its "mount -t hfsplus /dev/HFSDRIVE /mnt/HFSDRIVE".... then use "sudo cp -ax /mnt/LEPDVDUSB/. /mnt/LEPDVDPART/." to copy all files from the lep dvd on the usb drive to the internal drive 9 gb partition you made earlier. don't forget the periods after the slashes....

5. Now have a copy of boot-132 ready somehow.... restart and insert the cd, when you get to the boot screen, press esc, then type 80 for the first hd, then enter, then the required boot strings.

I am using -v -legacy, and my lep dvd has already had voodoo kernel put on it and the apple.boot.plist adjusted accordingly, so I didnt need to boot the kernel from the ramdisk on the boot-132 disk. It begins to boot but hangs at starting dsmos.kext. So im going to try booting the kernel from the ramdisk, as well as trying appledecrypt instead of dsmos. finally i might try using chameleon instead...

Anyways thats how I did it and where I stand....

thanks for that! I'll keep you updated on my progress too...

i have a kalyway that can boot and install all the way. i used that to partition to gpt, and after that i installed windows. windows recognises the other drive as 'unformatted'

what is gpt+mbr? must this formatting be done in a special way? cos i only formatted to gpt first, with 2 mac extended [journalled] disks, before installing windows on one of them.

Here's how I upgraded to retail 10.5.7.

I already had iPC 10.5.6 installed, on a GPT/HFS+J formatted drive.

Using Disk Utility, I made a new partition on the drive, and restored a .dmg image of my Apple install DVD to it.

I made one more partition on the same drive and moved everything I wanted to keep to that partition.

I made a Chameleon 2.0 RC1 boot CD following one of the various tutorials in the forum.

Then I used the Chameleon boot CD to boot the retail partition.

Installed 10.5.6 clean where iPC used to be installed.

Rebooted, still using the boot CD

Installed Chameleon 2.0 RC1 to the EFI partition

Installed my apps and other stuff that I use

Updated to 10.5.7 using the full combo update

Fixed my LegacyAppleYukon2.kext to work with the new Yukon2 drivers in 10.5.7 (thanks cVad)

Ran software update

Boom Samosa.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well iirc, boot132 wouldn't even recognize my boot drive with just the gpt partition tables. I know that for boot camp operation on a real mac, a gpt/mbr hybrid format disk must be used. But just to be safe I created the hybrid partition map anyways and it worked great with boot132. Problem I have is voodoo kernel will not even completely boot onto the installer. Any of you guys using a non-vanilla kernel sucessfully? And how did you get OSx to install with the non vanilla kernel?
