Intimidated by all the steps in RoberT's excellent P5Q thread, I decided to take a crack at using the 'XxX_x86' distro, which has worked well for me in the past (but sadly has been recently discontinued).

LAN, Sound, and Video is working fine. Starts up and shuts down fine too. Didn't try sleep/standby.

From what I recall, here's the steps that I took:

  • Flash the BIOS per RoberT's instructions and configure it for AHCI
  • Boot from XXX_X86 DVD
  • When prompted press F8 to select boot options
  • Type -v cpus=1 and press enter
  • Wait for installer to boot up
  • Follow prompts. When possible, go to DISK UTILITY and sort out whatever disk/partition you want to prepare. If you're re-installing on top of a previous Leopard install, be sure to erase it first.
  • Select the disk you want to install to
  • Instead of doing a default install, select CUSTOMIZE and choose these options:
  • - Under OPTIONAL BOOTLOADERS, choose PCEFI v9.0
  • - Under CHIPSET SUPPORT, choose New ICHx (ICH10)
  • - Select appropriate video options (For my Nvida GTS 250, I used 'NVIDIA 9800GXTX 512MB' drivers)
  • - Under AUDIO DRIVERS, choose ALC \ ALC1200
  • - Under NETWORK, choose AttansicL1Ethernet (even though it doesn't work)
  • - Under POWER MANAGEMENT, choose GenericCPUPowerManagement 1.1.3
  • - Choose everything under TOOLS
  • Then proceed with the install
  • After it reboots, you can remove the XXX DVD
  • Skip all the registration stuff, but make sure you create an account that doesn't have a blank password
  • Find a better AttansicL1Ethernet kext (the file size will be bigger) - try RoberT's thread
  • After installing, remember to turn off system updates.
