Hello y'all !

I'm trying to install Kalyway 10.5.2 on my Q6600 (P5W-DH mobo) and I get the "the installer could not validate the content of 'base system' package" message.

I've searched a lot here and on some mac forums and I'm 99% sure the problem is caused by RAM.

I tested my 2 RAM sticks, they're all fine, I've tried all combinations but every time I get this 'base system' message.

I have Corsair XMS2 PC6400 so it seems to be a very very bad choice for those who want to build a leopard system by themselves.

So what RAM do you have Leopard users ?

And it's important that we talk about the RAM used for the install cause it seems to be the problematic point, after it seems all good (read mac forums, a lot of ppl change ram and it works, then they want to reinstall and BAM the 'base system' message appears).

Of course, if someone as another idea to solve the 'base system' problem, he's welcome, but now I'm pretty sure it's RAM related (and I'm far from being the only one I think).

Thanks in advance,

Peace !

Ram

I highly doubt it is due to memory. Memory issues are generally hardware related. For example you will see actual mac owners posting about memory problems, some with your problem, but this is most likely due to buying cheap and/or unsupported memory for their hardware. Some motherboards are finicky about the brand/model of memory you use. If you have ran windows on this machine for a reasonable amount of time and have not experienced problems then I doubt you will problems running OSX. I have the same memory on my Asus board. The memory is not on the supported list but works fine.

1. Look up your motherboard on the manufacturers website. Most likely in the manual it will have a list of recommended or supported memory.

2. If its not in the manual then Google something like XMS2 6400 memory problems P5W-DH

3. Google memtest, download the iso image burn it to and boot it. It will run a series of test. I generally let it run for a few hours. It should detect most memory related issues.

Disk

My bet is on the disk itself. You want to make sure that you burn at the absolute slowest speed 1x if possible as even if a disk verifies there may still be problems.

* While your on the manufacturers website get your mobo's chipset information and post it along with the rest of your specs in your Signature. This can be done via My Controls: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...rCP&CODE=00

Please follow the rules described in this thread (Most importantly keeping your signature to no more than 5 lines of normal text: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...p;hl=signatures

You may also want to consider looking for a more recent distro as 5.2 is getting a bit dated. iDeneb 1.4 (10.5.6) is a great choice.

Thanks a lot lanceomni2 ! You bring light to my day !

I thought it would be RAM related cause a lot of mac users (with apple hardware) complaining about the same error message solved the problem by changing RAM.

But the RAM ain't cheap, it never fell on the floor or something and I've used it on a daily basis for 1 year and a half.

Indeed, it ain't a supported model according to my mobo's manual... But it worked like a charm on windows until now.

I googled as you advised and there's nothing told about real problems (the only one told is that you have to specify manually the speed in the bios to have the correct one, what I already knew).

I'll run memtest but the other day I 'everested' my system and all the benchmark results were very good, don't know if it helps but at least it indicates that my system works great.

I've got to admit that I didn't burn the disc at the slowest speed.

I'll burn it again at 1x and see.

By the way, as you seem to master the subject, is it a problem to use a DVD+RW ?

I'll look for ideneb, is it more difficult to install ? And mainly, is it possible to install it using an IDE DVD drive (JMicron chip) ?

I'll follow your indications for the signature and forum rules.

Thanks A LOT! :(

If I were you I would try just a write once DVD-R. These distros are packed tight and even the slightest of errors can cause problems.

No iDeneb shouldn't be a problem. Most newer distros come with a wider range of kexts and patches. Im not 100% certain on the JMicro chip but I run IDE DVD drives due to SATA DVD write issues with my nForce chipset. I dont think it should cause any problems.

I've downloaded iDeneb 1.4, burned it at 4x speed (it seems that my drive can't go slower) on a DVD-R and...

SAM MULTIMEDIA ERROR!!!

What is strange is that when I was fighting with Kalyway 10.5.2, at a moment I messed with something in my hardware setup and it created a SAM MULTIMEDIA ERROR, then I remember I moved back to the previous hardware setup and it stopped happening. Of course, I can't remember what it was...

Now I really don't know what to do...

If someone can help, that would be greatly appreciated. :D
