ianoshorty
Hey all - im a silent observer in need of some assistance if anyone can offer it. I am currently running OS X - 10.5.1 (kalyway) on my main machine. After jostling with graphics kexts and fitting a Realtek network card the thing is working brilliantly, but for one problem. My network download rates are abysmal from Samba shares (Windows). I store EVERYTHING on my windows server, so I need this to speed up, but atm the network doesnt seem to be able to handle more than about 500kb/s which is nowhere near enough for streaming video without stuttering. If there was a way to make this work, id be jubilant! Otherwise, machine performance is great. I have tried searching for help, and tried implementing -http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=78210&pid=553466&mode=threaded&start= solution but unfortunately i cannot get XCode3 to install and thus cannot carry out the terminal lines requested. Does anyone have any other ideas about how to increase Samba performance. Incidentally, it feels like (though i have no written proof) my upload rate is far faster than my download. Im more than willing to answer any questions on the system, but for now heres some common system information. Im running Kalyway 10.5.1. My machine: Asus p5kc Motherboard 2.4Ghz Q6600 Intel Quad 4GB DDR2 Memory Radeon x1950 Pro Havent modified the kernel in any way, and the only kexts i have added are graphical ones. If anyone can manage a solution, id be very grateful. Thanks a million. Ian. marionez
You should try your onboard lan and see the difference, ATL1 driver is here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...p;#entry1003419 Samba should be quite slow in many cases Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/158889-samba-problems/#findComment-1114057 Share on other sites

That kext says 10.5.6, will it work with 10.5.1? Many thanks for the suggestion. That kext says 10.5.6, will it work with 10.5.1? Just tried, installed fine, but unfortuneatly the on board doesnt show up in my hardware / network prefs. Still not recognised. -- UPDATE Ok found a driver for the onboard LAN, thats working fine but still exactly the same transfer rates. Any more ideas? -- UPDATE 2 Using the on-board network card the following temporarily fixes the problem until i restart. Anyone know how i can get this command to run on startup (i tried adding it to shellscript executed via a account login item to no avail). sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0 -- Final Update Although this fix was not perfect (still get nowhere near the performance i did on windows), it worked well enough to get me streaming video etc accross the network. Finally, for those interested, i used a program called Lingon to run the command on startup.
