Dear all,

My sister is a fresh graduate in Multimedia and Communication (TV and cinema stuff) and is looking to buy a iMAC for running Final Cut Pro. She has a tight budget and the program itself is quite expensive.

My question is which iMACs are compatible (and run it reasonably well) with Final Cut Pro?

In the website the requisites are:

An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Studio is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors)

Furthermore, the Motion has some additional requisites:

A standard or built-to-order system configuration with a NVIDIA GeForce 5200, 6600, 6800, 7300, 7800, 8600, 8800 or Quadro class graphic card.

The Color also has some requisites:

The standard graphics card in any Mac Pro, 17-inch MacBook Pro, 24-inch iMac, or 2.5GHZ or faster Power Mac G5 Quad.

I'm not sure if she wants to use Motion but the Color requisites seem basic.

The new iMACs have the following graphics cards:

  • NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256MB
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512MB
  • ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB

Can you tell me if Final Cut Studio is compatible with any of the iMAC's graphics cards?

My understanding is that Final Cut Pro and Color are compatible and that a faster graphics card is not really an issue since these are processor intensive applications (a quad-core would be much more useful).

However, I think Motion will not run on iMACs...

Can anyone help me to clarify these issues?

Many thanks!

Final Cut Pro, and all of it's applications (Color, Motion etc.) all run great on the new iMacs.

A good graphics card helps with Color and Motion. They use graphics-accelerated effects. The 9400M is pretty good for this, but obviously the GT 120/130 and 4850 are even better.

As for Quad Core/Dual Core, I'm not even sure Final cut runs much faster on a Quad core.

This is what makes a new iMac a great computer for Final Cut.

This is great news! Has anyone tried out Final Cut Studio on the new iMACs?

Since these new graphics cards are not listed in the Motion, I wanted to know if anyone had problems getting accelerated graphics.
