Please provide us with some specifications about your system (CPU, Motherboard, Graphics & Model Number if applicable). Adding more specific information allows us to respond quickly with more precise answers. Chipset, LAN, Audio & If your Graphics are integrated or not, are excellent additions.

You can also place this information in your "Signature". It will then appear on every post you make. This can be done via My Controls: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...rCP&CODE=00

Please follow the rules described in this thread (Most importantly keeping your signature to no more than 5 lines of normal text: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...p;hl=signatures

  • Make sure that you always boot using -v Verbose Mode as most people have grown tired of seeing "white/grey screen with apple logo & spinning wheel" (Not saying you have but just to let everyone know.)

  • Make sure you burn the install disk at the slowest speed possible as a disk can verify and still cause problems.
  • Write down the steps you took for each install attempt.

  • Try boot-flags such as -f -x -F

-f Forces OSX to load kexts from the extensions folder and not the cache file

-x Safe Mode will only load the basic drivers

-F Forces OSX to ignore the com.apple.boot.plist file which contains certain preferences which when set wrong can cause problems.

  • If you get into the installer do not choose anything that you are not 100% sure will work.

  • DO NOT choose any of the graphics options. Not choosing anything will still give you 1024x768 default graphics. This is a big one as choosing the wrong driver or multiple drivers will cause problems.

  • You can choose multiple chipsets as long as they dont conflict. For instance do not choose more than one nForce or VIA chipset options

thank you for responding to me!

i have a hp pavilion dv4217cl notebook pc

pentium m 1.73 ghz; intel 915gm/gms, 910gml express; alps pointer (2-way); intel pro wireless 2200 b/g; realtek 8139/810x family ethernet; ti pcixx21/x515 cardbus; intel 8280 usb univ host controller; ti ohci compliant 1394 host controller; intel 8280 1 fb/fbm ultra ata storage controllers; agere systems ac'97 modem

i did a lot of research and i am sure i have the right build for installation. i think the notebook uses the gma915 (though i am not sure if "gm915" spec above actually translates to the "gma915" driver on the dist.). i need a dist with those drivers if i want a smooth install. recently a new build with gma915 arrived on the scene which i am using: iPC_OSx86_10_5_6_Universal_PPF5_Final. prior to this i built it using JaS 10.4.8 and using a jumper for the video. i was successful but it ran "choppy" and there were other issues (sound, movies, etc), so i put suse back on it.

in the most recent pass, I did the following

hp dv4217cl notebook; installed:

9.5 voodoo kernel as advised for sse2 proc (pentium m 1.73ghz)

laptop display (it is a notebook)

gma915 (correct video chipset)

intel ich10 (which is supposed to cover the ich6 chipset on this notebook)

realtek 1000 (which covers the 810x on this board)

ac97 audio (still don't know which is the correct audio for this notebook; no docs even on hp website)

intel proset wireless 2200 (the wireless adapter)

used -f -v on boot (was unaware of "-F" will use it this next pass) booting but still getting still getting: "display: family specific matching fails" and "GFX0: family specific matching fails"

And a blue screen. i think the os is running because it did not panic or reboot, but i am not sure

maybe i am taking the wrong approach. i am going to rebuild selecting nothing and see how that goes. i will continue to post.

thank you again for your help!
