I'm using the pre-patched 10.5 ISO for AMD and SSE2 processors. My hardware is an early Dell Pentium 4 system (1.7GHZ Williamette line) with IDE HD, LiteOn DVD ROM, NEC CD burner, ATI 9700video (AGP card, not onboard) and 768MB of RAM.

Nothing I seem to do seems to work with this configuration. When running the installer without selecting "Customize" (to install the Pre-patch and SSE2 workaround), OSX hangs on the grey Apple boot screen followed by the appearance of a small crossed out circle, which I take to indicate something (probably the HD) isn't mounting.

When I run the Custom install (to select the patch) I end up with this kernal panic during boot.

Is there anything I am doing wrong?

Do I have to invest in some new hardware, like a Pentium D and new Mobo?
