JokerPCs
Hi folks, In my workplace, we only use Apple Macs. So wih my Asus eeePC 1000HGo I didn't want to introduce Windows into a purely Mac-LAN. So I just finished setting up my brand new Asus eeePC 1000HGo (the one with 3G built in). It took me a few weeks to figure out all the tweaks and cheats to get everything working, but finally, here I am, posting from my brandnew eeeMAC over the 3G network. I set up OSX on a 16GB SDHC, so I can still dualboot with the original WinXP installation the eeePC came with. What is not yet working right now: - WLAN (Atheros AR5007EG) - was working in one of the preveous attempts, but I have no idea why - LAN (Atheros AR8121) Everything else, including 3G, is working just like a charm. So here is how I did it: 1.) get a copy of iDeneb 10.5.5 v1.3 (I tried several other distributions, this is the only one that worked for me) 2.) go to BIOS, turn off onboard LAN 3.) install OSX, using an external DVD-Drive a) boot from DVD go to "Utilities" -> Disk Utility c) Partition the SD-Card as follows: - one partition, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), I named it "OSX" - go to "Options", select "GUID Partition Table" - press "Apply" - close Diskmanager and continue Setup d) When beeing asked to select a destination, choose "OSX" (the partition you just created on the SDHC), then press "Continue" e) Now click "Customize" to modify your Setup-Selection - choose the Language Translations you like to have available (I choose German) - choose "Additional Fonts" - choose "X11" - open "Patches" ->"Audio" -> choose AppleAzaliaAudio - open "Chipset" -> choose ICHx Fixed - open "Fix" -> choose "ACPI-Fix", "Cpus=1-Fix", "FireWire Remove", "PowerManagement", "PowerOff_Fix" - open "Video" -> open Intel -> Choose Intel GMA950 - open "Applications" -> choose all click "Done" click "Install" f) grab a cup of coffee, this will take some time now (you can skip the Disk check, if you like to speed up things a little) 4.) About 45min later (or 4 cups of coffee and a little snack), the eeeMAC will restart. 5.) Now hold the "ESC"-Key during the grey Screen and Select "Single Flash Reader" as the boot drive. 6.) Answer the questions as you like 7.) the question "How do you connect?" must be answered: "My computer does not connect to the internet" (yet) 8.) create your Account, take a picture (yes, the camera works right of the box) 9.) choose your time zone 10.) Now: Log in to your new eeeMAC - you're done! 11.) so here comes the tricky part: the post installation updates a) Download the "post Installation updates for eeePC" (here are all the files: Post Install updates for eeePC) open "APPS" -> install "About this Mac" c) open Kext Helper B7 and drag alle .kext files from KEXT-Folder to the window. enter your password and click "easy install" d) as it says: cross your fingers and reboot, so do that! After reboot, your screen should now have the correct resolution (1024x600) e) lets correct the sound issue: open the folder "Sound fix" an copy Spark and Audieee to your Programs Install "chud.dmg" Install "AzilaAudio.pkg" RESTART (keep fingers crossed!) Add "Audieee" to your Startup Applications, start Audieee and selct the internal Speakers as the output device. 12.) Now we should speed up grafix a little bit: open "OSx86Tools" and enable Quartz GL, a reboot might be required. 13.) Now just replace the "PowerManagement.Bundle" which can be found here: \\OSX\System\Library\SystemConfiguration 14.) Setting up 3G is quite easy: a) goto UMTS Fix Folder Install "MobileConnectDriver(2.7.1)-intel.pkg (make the modem available in System Preferences) c) open System Preferences - Network (3 new adapters will be found) d) press "Apply" and close System Preferences e) install "Mobile_Connect_Drv_App.pkg (lets you enter your PIN for SIM) f) open "MobileConnect" in your Applications Pane an enter SIM PIN -> besides that, there is NOTHING to set up here! g) open System Preferences -> Network -> Select HUAWEI Mobile h) Set up for T-Mobile-Network (google if you are on any other network): - Telephone Number: internet.t-mobile - Account Name: t-mobile - Password:TM i) go to "Advanced" - Vendor: Generic - Model: GPRS (GSM/3G) - APN: internet.t-mobile j) Press "OK" -> select "Show Modem status in menu bar" -> press "Apply" you can now simply connect to the net by using the phone symbol in the menu bar That's it. You are now the owner of the world's smallest MacBook (eeeMac, maybe) You can easily install all updates by using the application called "Software Update". It would be nice if someone could leave some comments on this guide (maybe where it can be improved) and help me with the missing LAN/WLAN drivers. So, enjoy your eeeMac, Balu Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/150659-leopard-on-asus-eeepc-1000hgo/ Share on other sites
JokerPCs
Hello again, I am posting this from my nice little eeeMAC. I am still fighting with LAN and WLAN. WLAN (AR5007EG): works from time to time (KisMac) LAN (AR8121): No idea how to set up this. I got around the WLAN issue by simply using a USB dongle, but thats not the slim and beautiful Mac-way, I'd prefer. So any help would be highly appreciated. I did all updates by the way. When applying the OSX 10.5.6 update this was the end of my eeeMAC. Itinstalled correctly, but upon rebooting the eeeMAC got stuck. No way to resolve this So I had to set up all again and leave the patch 10.5.6 out. Now ist works like a charm, but without the latest patch. I was hoping that 10.5.6 would solve the network issues. any idea on that? karlchen
i have the eeepc 1000h GO, too. how did you install os x - without a bios update? do you make a bios update for yourself? how do you done it? i couldn't install it, because the leopard DVD stops at the white apple, directly after the booting from dvd. candyman
Just an FYI to anyone attempting to install Leopard on an EEE. I, like JokerPCs, was unable to boot any other disc than iDeneb 10.5.5 ..... that is until I tried iPC 10.5.6 PPF 5 final, and booted with the CPUS=1 flag.... That loads the install just fine. That having been said I still cannot get the wireless working. I've gotten a few 'working' installs from iDeneb and iPC. There are a -lot- more kext install options in iPC. When I find a good combo for my EEE 900ha, I will post the results. JokerPCs
I had the same problem here. I asked for an updated ROM at osrom.net, but without a result. Then I tried iDeneb v1.3 and that worked right out of the box (as described). My WLAN is working by now, but I still have to use the KisMac cheat. I wanted to update to 10.5.6, but that crashes the system. I even tried iPC 10.5.6 distribution, which is said to be working fine with the eeePC, but as all other distributions, I couldn't fire it up at all. So I guess I'll stay with iDeneb 10.5.5. I installed it once more, this time to the HardDisk (I don't need Windows any more). Looks like that's even a little bit faster and comapreable to my MacBook Pro now. JokerPCs
I just got the latest iPC 10.5.6 final distribution and tried to install it. It came with Atheros AR5007EG support and HUAWEI Mobile Connect rigth from the box. Sounds great, I thought. So I tried to install it, but installation fails and the eeeMAC stops during booting after the installation. Damn, this would have been great. @Karlchen: any news? The latest iDeneb should work without the BIOS-update. Please post your Setup-selections, if you are able to install iPC 10.5.6 final on your 1000HGo. xyzolog
Hi! I've just downloaded iDeneb 1.4 (10.5.6) and installed it on my EeePC 901 (4+16Gb): it works quite well, at least as good as with iDeneb 1.3. The problem is that I'm not sure which options I should tick or not during the installation: I don't know exactly what is supported by default by the new version compared by the previous one (1.3). What does not work: - webcam - Wifi: I have changed the default card by an Intel 5300 which is not supported by Leopard (help requested!) - LAN: not tested yet - VLC: no video, blank screen - shutdown button - hotkeys (except brightness control which is OK) Despite what is written in changes logs, I've kept default kernel (vanilla 9.6.0): they mentioned that we should use Voodoo kernel as it supports SSE2. Any advice about this? Does EeePC 901 support SSE3? What is supposed to happen with vanilla kernel running on SSE2 system? Happy to share my experience on this! JokerPCs
I am just trying to get hold of the new iDeneb, as all other distributions either fail to install or, after a successful installation, refuse to boot. With the iDeneb v1.3 I got almost everthing working (as described in first post). WLAN is now wokring (still with the KisMAC cheat, but hey, it's working!), 3G is just fine. In my installation, the camera is working out of the box. As you have exactly the same, I don't see any reason for the failure of your's. LAN is said to be working with a different installation setup, which I will try on the new installation and let you know. VLC first had a blank screen, too. But I turned on OpenGL (as described) and now everything is working smooth. I found a nice little Apple sticker that came with my iPhone 3G. I put it to the clamshell of the eeeMAC, now it looks just perfect. Attached to this post, you'll find a little picture of a dreamful workplace ;-). vince22
Hi Everyone, I glad I found this forum and thanks to JokerPC for excellent guide transforming my brand new Asus eeePC 1000H US.version ( bios ver. 1501). Everything works out of the box using Ideneb v1.3 10.5.5 except LAN port. Wireless LAN work perfectly with this Ralink driver (STA_RT2860xxx.12_04.dmg) it uses WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI, thanks to andrewchapman.net for this driver update. Very happy so far with this wonderful eeeMAC. JokerPCs
@bjornfot: I am still stuck with this. WLAN works with the KisMAC cheat, but not the real Macintosh way ;-) Someone said that LAN will work with the Atlantic L! checked during install, but I couldn't manage to get this wokring yet. @vince22: Do you have a good link to that WLAN-Driver? I'll try Leo4all as soon as it comes out, maybe that will be the solution for the remaining issues. We will see... Care to tell me how to do it? =) No, that's correct. Just use the "Restore"-option, thats all. You can also use DriveGenius, which also solves the problem quite nice and makes my USB Stick recognized as a disk drive after I restored the image onto the stick. Another way might be the use of a preconfigured OSX for USB-Sticks, like iPortable (but, as only iDeneb v1.3 works on my eeeMAC, I couldn't boot my with that stick. But it wokrs great on an Compaq presario though). JokerPCs
I just found an image of a working OSx86 liveDVD for my eeePC: iPC X-DL LiveDVD Applying my patches mentioned above, this enables me to have a 10.5.6 installation on my eeeMAC. So now I con run iLive'09 and iWork'09 with my eeeMac. I'll try to clone the working LiveDVD to my hard drive now. Hopefully this will work, too... JokerPCs
Hey,... installing macos x on hdsd card. So can you tell me about speed? Is it normal or is sd card too slow for it? thnx I used a 16GB SDHC at 4x speed. Speed is fine, but running from the internal HDD is still a bit faster. As I have to SDHC I found a beautiful (and secure) way to dual boot. There is no system on the harddrive any more. I just have the two SDHC and depending on what system I want to start, I plug in the proper card. Saying this, I think I can trash the Windows card, as I didn't use it at all. I thing I'll wit for the end of CeBit, as the price for memory cards at huge size will drop dramatically after that (that's what my computer store told me). 16GB is not really much for OSX. It works fine for the system and some small stuff, but not for all the things I need for my daily work. Have a good time, Balu ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi folks, I just found a way to run 10.5.6 on the eeeMAC. I found a distro called iPC X-DL, which contains full installation and a live System of Leopard 10.5.6 It also works on the eeeMAC. I booted to the Live-System and cloned it to my harddrive. Then I applied the Patches mentioned in my first post. That's it, I am running 10.5.6 on the eeeMAC. Sound is not working yet, but I am sure I just missed something dureing setup, so I'll try again. Beeing on the live DVD, you also have the Option to run the normal Setup from there. I did so, copied eveything to a external harddrive (for testing only) and everything went smooth. But when restarting the eeeMAC, the internal keyboard and mouse were not recognized. External ones were working perfectly. Maybe I missed to click something during setup. I'll investigate on this issue, too and hpe someone can give some feedback. NaMcO
Followed all the instructions for my 1000H as described, everything works fine up to the section where i have to set my language and keyboard (after reboot). On the "Do You Already Own a Mac?" screen, i choose "Do not transfer my information now", click continue and after a long time (2-3 mins) it just cycles back to the language/keyboard screen. I tried a lot of language/keyboard combos but nothing gets me by that screen. Anyone got a similar issue and can help me get through it? Thanks... JokerPCs
Here I am back with my eeeMAC. I am still using iDeneb v1.3 (10.5.5), as it is the mostly working version I could find. I changed the version manually to 10.5.6 and now even iWork'09 is running here. As I am using Keynote for presentations, I am facing antoher problem: I cannot use an external monitor (or beamer) on OSX. I can see a picture while booting up, but once the system is startet, the external monitor goes blank. I tried everything I could think of, but it appeasrs that the intel 950x driver is the problem.
