Sony Vaio VGN-AR71M advice

Got this the other day, it's nice and quick and of course the first thing I did when I got it out of the box was try and put Kalyway 10.5.2 SpeedstepKernel on it. Everything except the WiFi, Audio and Hardware Accelerated Graphics works. I'm not too bothered about the WiFi or Audio for now as I'd most like to have the graphics adapter setup first.

 

It has an Nvidia 8400M GT on it which displays fine when using VESA but when I try to use NvInject I get a black screen when loginwindow starts from what I could work out when I booted in verbose mode. So, I did a bit of reading on the GPU and support seems pretty patchy, and I think that would be a rather optimistic way of putting it.

 

Would I have better chances of getting HW Acceleration if I took another route such as PC EFI + retail disc? (If so, could you point me in the direction of guide.) or have I completely overlooked something rather trivial.
