loop at account creation, partially solved

Hello, I've done a retail dvd install on my Lenovo S10 netbook using the Dell Mini9 EFI installer. However, I've run into the glitch where after completing the install, you are asked questions regarding account creation and the computer keeps looping. I.e. the portion of the install where it asks your keyboard type, if you'd like transfer settings from another mac. I follow the prompts, but after telling it not to transfer settings it loops back to the keyboard selection. I found the following fix:

I followed these instructions after booting with -s option:

/sbin/mount -uw /

passwd root  <- Type any password you want

touch /var/db/.AppleSetupDone

reboot

 

Now when I boot the computer it takes me to a login screen asking for username and password. I tried the usernames: root and admin, and the password I had set at command prompt. The computer won't let me login with either root or admin. What should I do?

 

Also, this may be stupid but... When following those instructions should I have typed in:

1) passwd root <mypassword>

or

2) <mypassword> root

 

I did passwd root <mypassword>. Thanks for your help.
