Obsidian1
Hi there, Knowing the woes and problems of forum tech help (Being rather windows-savy and a Linux Enthusiast) I shall try to outline my problem and what I've done about it as well as possible. As should be the case with most people, if I miss anything out or you require additional information, all you need to do is ask. For starters, my system Spec: ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA MoBo (VIA PT880 Ultra Chipset) Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 2.66Ghz processor (SIW tells me it's SSE2 SSE3 and SSE4.1 compatible) 2x Corsair DDR2 1Gb RAM (Dual Channel) Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 3600 512MB Boot HDD: 80GB Maxtor (65GB Windows XP Partition - 15Gb Partition ready for Leopard) Data HDD: 500GB Maxtor 22" Widescreen main display 20" Widescreen secondary display For a project at Uni I am required to use Mac OS X. Sadly I only own a PC and a windows based Laptop, but having had a dual boot Linux Ubuntu / Windows XP machine for quite a while (not anymore), the thought of doing it again with Mac didn't really daunt me so I set about the preparations. I browsed the net, and chose a tutorial I figured looked decent, namely this one. I followed all the necessary steps, made sure I had the said DVD, the proper ammount of space on my drive etc etc. (System Spec. above) Popped the DVD in my drive. Install process went fine. My Customization options were: Kernel 9.20 Speedstep, ATI graphics, VIA Chipset and other things that don't really matter. At the end of the install process, my PC reboots, I get the grey apple loading bit with the little loading "gif", screen goes black, and comes back in a shade of light blue, and that's pretty much it. Nothing else. I tried reinstalling 3 or 4 times now with different customization options, varying from same result to endless boot loops to getting a no entry sign and having to reboot. It may just be my inability to think properly at the this time of night, or to input the proper key words in the search function, but I can't really find anything in the forums that help me out. Booting without the CD gives me a boot0: error Booting with the CD in -x is just safe mode, nothing new there, and takes me back to the install screen. Booting with the CD in -v for diagnostics gives me... well, alot, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for.. Also, that just takes me back to the install screen too. Some lines of -v that really jump out at me: AppleVIAATADriver: VIA UNKNOWN (CMD 0x1f0, CTR 0x3f4, IRQ 14, BM0xfc00) AppleVIAATADriver: VIA UNKNOWN (CMD 0x170, CTR 0x374, IRQ 15, BM0xfc08) localhost kextd[47]: can't add repository (not a directory) localhost kextd[47]: root filesystem is read-only; skipping kernel link data generation mDNSResponder[48]: getHelperPort: cannot contact helper The mDNSResponder thingy says that about 10x with multiple other errors/warnings about the same mDNSResponder Also, I have also noticed that my Windows partition has become unaccessible, there is no choice between booting MAc or Windows, where-as I had a Dualboot Linux/Windows with this hardware running fine. I suspect that this may be a mistake on my part and not Mac's though so I'll look into that myself. Thanks in advance for your time, hopefully this can get sorted or I'll have to look into other options for my Uni project. Hi there, Initially install OS X without audio, network and video driver options selected in DVD Customize menu......this way you can check if a basic OS X system works with VESA mode video......audio, video and network drivers can be installed later......audio ALC888 Audio Codec, LAN VIA PHY VT6103 chipset..... Also recommend USB keyboard and USB mouse.... With iDeneb v1.3 try booting with -v cpus=1 and initially choosing the following Customize selections: AMD Patch No Audio: No Chipset: VIA-SB Kernel: 9.4.0 StageXNU (Intel/AMD/SSE2/SSE3) Network: No Fix: AppleSMBIOS-27-MP Video: No Applications: Your choice UPDATE: Also check here......suggests not an easy path with your MOBO..... Obsidian1
Ok, did as suggested, a few times with some variations (see below why) booted in -v cpus=1 Customization options: Audio: None Video: None Network: None Kernel: 9.4.0 StageXNU (Intel/AMD/SSE2/SSE3) Chipset: VIA-SB Fix: I couldn't find the AppleSMBIOS-27-MP Fix as you stated, so first I checked the entire AppleSMBIOS fix. Install worked fine again, boot went all the way up to the grey apple loading screen, but instead of a bluescreen I got a warbled mixture of black and white. Mega tv snow, if you will. The second time (Just to make sure) I did the AppleSMBIOS OLD Version 1.0.1 Fix, as the lowest was 667 where-as my BIOS says my RAM runs at 533 =/ This gives me the same warbled black/white screen tears. Ubuntu 6.1 (Ah.. Edgy... those were the days) gave me this problem too, which I fixed by downgrading my graphicscard so that I could see what I was doing, getting appropriate drivers, and then upgrading back. Could the fact that I left out the ATI HD Graphics customization be my new problem? I figured, what the hell, I may aswell try and see if that was indeed the new problem, therefore saving everyones time here. Same Customization options as the first try (Entire AppleSMBIOS Fix as there is no AppleSMBIOS-27-MP Fix) + ATI HDBase + Radeon HD 3650 support customization options. Result: Power logo, everything grey, text stating I need to reboot. Ok, that last one just confused me a bit. =/ EDIT: UPDATE: Also check here......suggests not an easy path with your MOBO..... Oh great.. this is going to be amazing. Not. Ahwell, thanks for the help so far, I'll keep trying and updating this is I encounter more problems or get lucky and succesfull. Thanks again. Obsidian1
Sorry for the double post. After a long night and day working at it, I've decided I should try a different way of solving my Uni course. I only ever got as far as the blue screen and just spent 18 hours trying different customization options with no luck. Thanks for your help verdant.
