Ok first a little about my rig...

  • ECS 945GCT-M Mobo

  • Pentium Dual Core 2160

  • 2 Gbytes Ram

  • Nvidia 7600GS

  • 2 Sata Hard Drives

  • 1 IDE Hard Drive

  • 1 IDE DVD-RW

I have been using Leopard on this rig since 10.5.0 Brazilmac. I had done all efi up to v8, vanilla updates to v10.5.5 and minor patches here and there for sound and video. Everything had been running smoothly for so long I just stopped paying attention. I went to do an update to 10.5.6 and I completely borked my system.

Long story short, I have finally rebuilt my system UP TO v10.5.5 with the generous help of our friend LTL who posted this article:

Retail DVD Guide, 10.5.6, PC-EFIv9 installer, EFI studio ... http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=86167

I managed to mirror my 10.5.5 to a second drive, ran the 10.5.6 update on that and this time my sound went away, no ethernet, and time literally would go missing. Thanks to our friend Nemphys I found the solution to be simple and remove my AppleHPET.kext.

Can someone please be kind enough to tell me what is going on with DSDT.aml and AppleHPET? I found that those were causing my more problems on my motherboard than it was worth. I have decided NOT to do the patch, I am staying with EFI v9 and a vanilla 10.5.6 for now.

Are those needed only for the newer P45/Corei7 motherboards?

AFIK the release version of 10.5.6 does not require DSDT patching.......this is my own experience too.....

So okay I have searched the forums to find out when DSDT is needed, but maybe my search parameters are not on up to par.

I am asking because I would like to take this machine and move it to a media hub. This would most likely become a Windows box in the process. However I want another hackintosh in preparation for snow leopard etc. Would I need it for newer boards or something? I am looking at some of the Gigabyte boards - Intel - probably p45 chipset.

I will do research but it would be nice to have some background on what DSDT is used for.
