X_OS
Hi all. I've recently been looking into this as an option. However, before I consider it an option I had a few questions. 1: Will I be able to install OS X to boot from an external e-sata drive? 2: If so would also be possible to have 2 other partitions, one for ubuntu and one for any computer to use as storage? 3. I think my specs are okay, but I was wondering if I could get a go ahead from someone else. It would make me feel a little better. Specs: My Computer is a Gateway P-6860fx T5550 1.83ghz Core 2 Duo: SSE 5, Socket P (478) NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS Motherboard stuff: NorthBridge : Intel GM965 SouthBridge : 82801HBM (ICH8M) LPC Interface Controller SoundCard: Integrated (Realtek I think?) I also have external soundcard (USB). It's an Xmod. I'm willing to use either one of these. Wireless Card: Intel 4965AGN 4: Any advice on which distro I should use? I've heard a lot about the vanilla kernel being the best. Let me know if anymore information is needed. Thanks for any help. greyreap
I don't know that it is the e-sata alone, but so far it appears that it won't work with my Asus G50V trying to boot iDeneb 1.3 from e-sata with the internal drives set in raid 0. I have tried all the hdd modes in the bios (compatibility, enhanced, and raid) with no success. It installs fine then won't make it past "still waiting for root device". I have tried manually pointing it to the drive and partition "rd=disk2s2" with and without a combination of the different sata modes and safe mode but still get the same message. What I have seen from searching doesn't give any definitive answers as to whether e-sata is recognized as a boot drive by OSx86 (though there is no reason that it should not as everything recognizes e-sata drives as an internal drive). X_OS
Do you think that it would work, if it wasn't in RAID? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/141287-installing-to-an-e-sata-external-drive/#findComment-1003191 Share on other sites
smcpipint
I've booted from e-sata drives with no problem at all, on both 10.5.5 and 10.5.6, both when recognized by OS X as removable (orange icons), and not Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/141287-installing-to-an-e-sata-external-drive/#findComment-1003347 Share on other sites
RepomanUK
There's no reason why it shouldn't work. If you have trouble with your onboard e-sata port, try getting one of the cheap brackets that connect to an sata header on the motherboard. If you can use an internal sata drive then you should definitely be able to use an external as the only primary difference is the shape of the connector. X_OS
Thank you for all of the replies. That leaves the following remaining if someone wouldn't mind helping me with this. Would it be possible to dual boot on that drive (maybe triple boot) with ubuntu (and maybe XP). Also any suggestions on which distribution I should use given my hardware? Thanks!!!
