I´m going to build a PC and I´m thinking if it is safe to buy 20" widescreen monitor to use with Aperture. munky Posted April 4, 2006 Share Posted April 4, 2006 Aperture does run - albeit slowly - on osx86, and some users have reported 1600x1200 and higher resolutions. However, for it to be really usable, I suspect you'll have to wait for the Universal Binary patch for aperture. Happily, this should be released relatively soon. I currently have iMac G5 with only Nvidia 5200 64mb, and Aperture has been unusable....too slow. Therefore, I´m thinking of upgrading and preferrably I would want more than 1280x1024 res. I haven´t bought the monitor and I wonder whether 1600x1200 is much more likely to work than 1680x1024? munky Posted April 4, 2006 Share Posted April 4, 2006 Yes, I suspect that 'standard' resolutions will work better. Of course, you have a difficult choice just now, as ATI cards get Core Image (which I imagine will be useful for Aperture) and Quartz Extreme, but lack resolution-changing, so you're limited to whatever the Darwin bootloader decides you can have. Some X1600 users have reported 1600x1200 working, whereas I can only get 1280x1024 with my X1800XL 256Mb PCI-E (GeCube brand). Whereas nVidia is getting decent resolution and refresh rate support from the macvidia beta driver, but still lacks QE, CI and OpenGL. So I guess a LCD with standard res and x1600 is my best bet. I would rather like to have 1600x1200 than 1280x1024, but I think I prefer to buy 19"LCD and have everything performing perfectly rather than buying a 1600x1200 LCD that I would need to use at a lower res. Icebreaker Posted April 4, 2006 Author Share Posted April 4, 2006 Well.....I was disappointed also, but mainly because of the lack of speed, so I never gave it a decent try. I have been using Lightroom beta and like it very much. However, I think it won´t be cheap or easy to get when it will be released. Maybe Aperture isn´t worth this hazzle. Is Intel 945GNTLKR onboard graphics card adequate for all apps, except Aperture and 3D games? And does this card support 1680x1024? Icebreaker Posted July 29, 2006 Author Share Posted July 29, 2006 I´ve also heard more user reports on that Aperture has been getting stronger, so I´m again interested in it. I´m going to build a PC, but I probably need to get a Nvidia card because my wife is going to do 3D design in Windows and most of these apps like Maya don´t like ATI cards. So I´m asking if I could run Aperture if I have a Geforce 7600 or 7900? I don´t know who good gpu I need for Aperture or if there is some way of using one graphic card for Tiger (ATI or onboard if Nvidia won´t do the trick) and another for XP. Is a dedicated ATI a necessity in order to be able to run Aperture at an acceptable speed? Any suggestions are appreciated!
