Leo4allv3 (10.5.2) on Thinkcentre A51p

Hi all! i just installed Leopard 10.5.2 using the leo4allv3 dvd. This because i want to see if i can get used to working on a mac. If i can, i will buy a mac mini and/or macbook. But first i want to try it out without having to buy the hardware.

 

I am a linux engineer, so i know my way around a unix OS. But i am having some wierd issues with this install.

 

Sometimes the networking connectivity just stops, and i have to down and up the interface en0.

At other times, the system just freezes, and i have to perform a powercycle to continue working.

 

The computer has an P4 which supports SSE3 instructions, but im running the standard kernel (not the vanilla one, because that didn't even boot).

 

Also, about the networking, i'm not using the onboard intel nic, that one is disabled. I have an PCI Broadcom card, which is enabled. And i have installed the broadcom network drivers with the installation of leopard.

 

I have looked around in the logs, but i can't find any explanation for the system freezes, and the loss of connectivity. But maybe i'm not looking in the right spot. Can anybody give me some pointers?

 

The idea is to run this install for a couple of weeks so that i can see if i like mac os, better than linux (as desktop OS).

Hmm, i just had the networking issue again..

 

I see the following in the logfile:

I find it strange to see intel8254x, while its an broadcom nic? Or i am confuzed, and the add-in card is intel, and not broadcom.. LOL

 

I had to do the following to get networking back up again:

ifconfig en0 down
ifconfig en0 up

 

Ok, i just opened up the machine, and checked what kind of pci nic is installed, and its an intel!

I guess i had some sort of brain fart when installing the machine.. Ah well.

 

Its an Intel PRO1000 MT desktop card.. with intel8254x chipset.

 

I didn't select the drivers when customizing the install, but i thing the installer copied them anyway. Good.

 

But then the issue, how come connectivity is disrupted when generating some traffic (eg: copy from smb share) or something like that? Any idea's?

I'm still having issues, and its really annoying.. I can't find any log which has an error why connectivity is gone..

Or any fix, what so ever..

Ok, another update..

Tonight i swapped out the intel pro 1000 nic for a cheapy realtec card, which i found in one of the old machines in the attic..

I booted my hackintosh, and i just have copied a 4GB iso without any problems! So great! finally no more issues with networking.

 

But, now i connect my LACIE usb drive again, to make a time machine backup. But the OS doesn't detect the disk, and there are no messages in /var/log/system.log

 

Does anybody know what could cause that? I really want to have the disk connected again..
