I'm trying to walk my mom through an install on her Dimension 4400 over the phone (painful).

The patched 10.4.5 DVD boots, but when I start the install process with "-v", it stops with the following message (or something close to it, based on my mom's reading of the message):

Load of /sbin/launch failed Err No 88

Trying /sbin/mach/init

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Noooo! Cannot abandon hope because the alternative is a fresh install of XP, and then I just end up spending endless hours trying to defend her machine against spyware and viruses. I guess the alternative is getting her a Mini, but I figured if I could get OSX86 up and running, it would be a good trial run. She has such a hard time with computers, and though certainly OSX is better for novice users, I'm concerned migration from XP will be tough for her -- her skills on XP are very, very basic, but still it's what she's used to.

There have been positive reports of installation on the 4400 here, so I'm hopeful that if we get past this particular error, I'll be able to walk her through any other issues, at least until I'm able to enable Apple Remote Desktop and take it from there...

Thanks Metrogirl. The media was copied from a DVD that I did a successful install from on another Dell -- it was copied using Toast and I did verify the media. However, I agree with you that it does sound like the media's possibly bad. My mom probably let her cats walk on it.

Maybe I'll send along a new copy as a last ditch effort.
