I am sure this has been asked a 100 times or more so I apologize upfront.

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 w/ Intel GMA x3100. I have tried a number of tricks to try to get the display to work properly. If I don't install any intel graphics driver I can use my laptop display with no accelleration and at 1024x768. I have tried a number of things that seemed to work for others (the dellpackage, sleep tricks, etc.) but haven't worked for me. Any of these tricks that I try work great if I am hooked up to an external monitor but I can't get it to work on my laptop display at all. And when it is working on the external monitor I can't switch back to the laptop display at all. With the gma x3100 kext installed I can't get the laptop display to work at all only on external.

There must be something that I am missing. Any insight or help would be great.

Thanks

A few more details on what system you're using might help (Kalyway, Leo4all, etc) and which version (10.5.2, etc).

I have the GMA X3100 on a Toshiba, and the only way I got everything to work properly was to do the following:

1. Using the Kalyway 10.5.2 install and selecting the X3100 option at install, I could get the screen working fine, but no QE/CI. (Note: I had to use the -x option to get the install DVD to load properly.)

2. I used the Kalyway 10.5.3 combo update, but it gave me grey screen problems after a few restarts. Be sure to back up the X3100 kexts before you upgrade to 10.5.3

3. I removed all of the GMA 950 kexts using kexthelper, and replaced the AppleIntelGMA3100FB kext with the one from the 10.5.2 install. Be sure to repair permissions and then restart.

Since then, I've had no problems, everything working great.

I am running a Dell XPS M1330 and I am having the same problem as cu3edweb.

I installed using iATKOS v4i and got it up and running fine with no accelleration and 1024z786 on the laptop display. I have tried a few of the ideas in the posts and the only one that seemed to do anything was the DellPackage 3.5. Unfortunately, after doing this I cannot use the laptop display anymore and have to go to en external display. But the GMA x3100 is now detected.

So a few questions:

1. Anyone have any ideas?

2. If I just delete the appleintelgmax files would that get me back to a generic display?

3. How do you pull out the kext files from different ISO's?

Thanks,

Louis

OK here's a few ideas for your questions.

1. Try the Leopard Graphics Update, which you can download for free from the apple website. Be sure to back up all your kexts before you start so that you can go back to where you started if it doesn't work. Another really good idea to try is to check the HCL's (Hardward compatibility Lists) for your computer or similar ones. The list for 10.5.4 is pretty limited, but 10.5.2 is a pretty good place to start:

Here's the link for laptops/portables - http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...0.5.2/Portables

Here's the link for desktops - http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...10.5.2/Desktops

You can poke around the site for other system versions to see if you can find what others have done to make it work.

2. You can try deleting the kexts, but a better option is to MOVE them to a new folder, perhaps on your desktop. Then repair permissions using Disk Utility, and restart. You will probably get a standard resolution (maybe 1024x768 or something) that you won't be able to change, but if that works well for you, then go for it. I'd try that first before messing with the Leopard Graphics Update.

3. You can pull anything out of an install package or install DVD using a program called Pacifist. It's shareware, but you can use it for free if you sit through a timed ad (something like 10 or 15 seconds)

Best of luck :)

Hey Guys,

I've been doing some research on this for a while and Dell laptops have something that blocks the issue, so don't try what the other say like the Natit kext for x3100. It's not going to work (except for on an external display). If you read this forum http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...rt=#entry510810 you'll see that no progress has been made getting the natit.kext to work on Dells. The best thing you can do is delete the AppleIntelGMAX3100.kext extension so that you can boot up without -x flag for safe mode. We're gonna be stuck with the non-accelarated 1024x768 resolution for a while, so ya gotta live with it.

Other than that, be happy that iAtkos v4i installs smoothly :D I've worked with a lot of computers where just getting the installed to RUN is a huge challenge.

Let me know if any of you guys got sound or wireless working, as those are the only two things i'm missing. I also can't get photoshop/CS3 to run, it crashes on the activation screen everytime. Ideas anyone?

Actually this is not true. I have figured it out mostly. I have almost full resolution 1600x1000 (full would be 1680x1050 but it had mouse artifacts) working well with CI / QE working great w/ full hardware acceleration. I am at work right now so I can't remember what I used right off the top of my head, but I can get back on that. I also have sound and wireless working great. I only need to get stable 2 finger scrolling to work, shutdown, and my internal mic. Everything else including sleep is working great.

Dang well then by all means please post the info. I would love to have my wireless, sound and video all working properly. I wonder what would happen if you made a disc image of your mac partition and posted the ISO.. would other Vostros with similar or same hardware run off that you think?

Yeah I am not sure how well that one works. I had the Intel 4965 which isn't working yet as far as I know. I ordered a Dell Truemobile 1390 from ebay which gets recognized as a airport card. It works great. For the sound I just installed all the Sigmatel stuff from the Dell Installer Package from sonotone here --> http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=97966. I will check which files I installed for the graphics in a minute.

I got sound working with that package from sonotone, but i tried the x3100kext with no luck.. did you get this one to work? If so what exactly did you do? I followed the instructions a few times and couldnt get it to boot up fully outside of safe mode. I ended up restoring the old kexts to keep it working bug free for now

I followed this post --> http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=763465

The wierd thing is I used the extracted files from the leopard graphics update then the Natit.kext and the AppleIntelGMAx3100FB.kext from the download in that link, but it didn't work with full 1680 x 1050 resolution because of mouse artifacts. When I lowered it to 1600 x 1000 now I have QE / CI working great.

I am using a vanilla kernel I believe. I can check when I get home tonight, but yes I am using AHCI.

Well i've got everything working now. Turns out the Intel 950 kexts worked for me.. i guess somewhere along the line i thought Intel GMA 965 was GMAX 3100. I've got 1280 x 800 res, sound working, time machine working. Pretty much everything but sleep and AHCI. I tried doing a fresh install with my BIOS setup to AHCI and as soon as i booted i got errors loading AHCI kexts (using iAtkos v4i). Overall i'm satisfied though, i'll sacrifice the AHCI to have a working install. Thank again for your help.
