I wasn't quite sure where to post either of these. I will take the effort to delete this topic and remake them where appropriate if needed.

I have successfully installed the Kalyway 10.5.2 on a Compaq Presario C700, a cheap widescreen laptop (model number C717NR). Its hardware seems to be well suited to the Intel OS X, as it has a Core 2 Duo processor, an Intel graphics card, and a Broadcom wireless internet card. To whom it may concern, here is the correct install process:

- First make sure you have both a USB keyboard and a USB mouse handy. The keyboard and trackpad on the laptop will be temporarily unavailable during part of this process. You will also need a wired ethernet connection to download updates, since the wireless card is affected by the same problem.

- Prepare an empty partition with at least 8gb of space, or just use the whole drive.

- Install OSx86 using the Kalyway 10.5.2

- Do not allow Software Update to run yet. Instead, download and install the 10.5.3 combo update from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/mac...omboupdate.html

- Once it is finished, navigate to /System on your main volume in Finder. Right-click (or otherwise get a menu) on the folder labeled 'InstallAtStartup', and select "Get Info". Click on the "Sharing & Permissions" heading to expand it, and then click the lock icon at the bottom right to unlock it (you will need to enter your password). Then, click the plus (+) icon at the bottom left, select your user's account, and then hit "Select". Your user should now be on the permissions list. Click on the Privilege box beside your user (which will probably read "No Access") and change it to Read & Write. Close the Info window and navigate into the folder, then repeat the whole process for the subfolder labeled "something". Inside that folder will be a single script, labeled "1". Change the permissions for this script with the same process as before, and then open it in TextEdit. Search for the string "Do Not Steal Mac OS X.kext" near the bottom of the file, and replace it with "dsmos.kext". Save the file.

- Now restart with the Kalyway disc removed. The system will come up once, then unexpectedly restart again before booting completely. Don't panic, that means it worked. The second time it should boot normally, updated to 10.5.3 and, to all appearances, a normal OS X system. At this point you will have to plug in the USB keyboard and mouse due to a problem with the PS/2 driver. You can now safely run Software Update, which will upgrade the system to 10.5.4, and you should do so before the next step.

- Download and install the PS/2 fix from this topic: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=117359

- Reboot. You can now remove the external keyboard and mouse as well as the ethernet connection. You may have to fiddle with AirPort's settings to get the wireless card to work, initially. I found that it helped to disable the ethernet connection completely first.

Now, I also have a question, the answer to which would complete this little guide. Power management still doesn't seem to be operational for this laptop at all. There are no options visible relating to the battery, or to laptops. There is also no battery meter on the menu bar, and the system is unable to come back up from Sleep mode. The situation is still exactly the same after installing the PowerManagement.bundle from this topic: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=80425

Are there any other tweaks of that bundle that I could try, or any alternative solutions? I'll try everything.

EDIT:

I just tried to implement a fix that worked on /System/Library/Extensions/AppleACPIPlatform.kext/Contents/Plugins/AppleACPIPowerSource.kext, and promptly discovered that I don't have that kext! I highly suspect this is part of the problem. Where can I get a reliable version of that kext, or the whole AppleACPIPlatform.kext, for 10.5.4?

I've found a fix. I revised the guide to include it, but I still don't know where I should put this:

- A step-by-step guide to getting 10.5.4 on the Compaq Presario C700 (C717NR) -

You need a USB keyboard and mouse until the >10.5.3 PS/2 problem can be patched, and a wired ethernet connection until AirPort can be set up.

1- Obtain a Kalyway 10.5.2 install DVD (you're on your own for this).

2- Prepare an empty partition of at least 8gb. If you already have a bootloader, make a chainloader entry for this partition.

3- Boot the DVD and open Disk Utility. Format the partition, and be sure it's journaled.

4- Continue the install process. It will automatically restart when it's done. If you have dual-booting already set up, eject the DVD before it restarts, and then boot to the new OS X partition. If not, leave the DVD in. As long as you don't press a key at the boot prompt, it will boot normally to the hard drive, and not to the install.

Do not allow Software Update to run at this point.

5- Download and install the 10.5.3 combo update. When it's finished, do not restart, just leave the window. Open /System on the main volume in Finder. There will be a folder there called InstallAtStartup. Follow the steps below to unlock it. Repeat the same steps for the folder inside called scripts, and then the script called 1. Open the script in TextEdit, and change "Do Not Steal Mac OS X.kext" near the bottom to "dsmos.kext". Save the file.

* Right-click on the folder and select Get Info, then open the Sharing & Permissions section.

* Click the lock icon and enter your password.

* Add your user to the permissions list

* Give your user Read & Write permission

6- Plug in the USB keyboard and mouse and restart (it will actually restart twice).

7- Run Software Update to get 10.5.4, and restart again.

8- Download and install the PS/2 fix in this topic and restart. You can remove the USB keyboard and mouse. You can also set up AirPort.

9- Download and install this power management fix, then restart (last time!). The "auto installer" is the fastest way, and it works fine.
