MacPub
Im considering getting a dual 1.42ghz G4 for my aging mdd. The bus speed is the same as the dp 1.42ghz g4, and supposedly with snap right in. My problem is that www.dvwarehouse.com isn't selling it with a heat sink. Can i use my heat sink off of my single 1.25ghz g4? or do i have to have a heat sink specifically for dual processors? FrankOS_Scripting
It suppose to work. Anyway PPC CPU's are not big heat dispenser so, you supposed to take your Dual Core with a little bit of thermal paste and after, the job is done!! MacPub
so all the heatsinks are the same through out the MDD series? just gotta add thermal paste to it. FrankOS_Scripting
Well, I retract what I say before.. After a bit of search on the net, I find this article pretty interesting. I quote you some "hot" points. After doing some preliminary reading we found that doing a processor upgrade for a G4 can sometimes require messy heat sink paste. Some other mac proc upgrades use the same heat sink provided with your original proc. We decided on a choice that does not require thermal paste and has a larger new heat sink and fan included: the PowerLogix PowerForce47 G4/2.0GHz with 512K 1:1 L2 Cache Per Processor. To start with, we did read the documentation shipped with our Powerlogix upgrade. This being fairly basic in some ways, we were reassured and jumped right in. To save yourself the same hurdles we met, read on. The documentation's summary of a powerlogix in an agp upgrade: 1. Upgrade the apple firmware of the motherboard (the boot rom) to 4.2.8 or higher. 2. Upgrade the firmware again with Powerlogix's proprietary software. 3. Remove the old processor. 4. Install the new processor. 5. Boot. MacPub
Yeah thats for the older 100mhz and 133mhz bus speed macs made back in late 90's. Those are a peice of cake to upgrade. With the MDD (Mirror Drive Doors) model they have a 133mhz, and 167mhz bus speed, they also have a different cpu board then what was put int he privious models prior to the MDD model, you have HUGE heatsinks, twice the size of your fist (well, depending on the size of fist i guess) and i'v never opened or taken apart a dual G4 MDD so i have no clue if the heatsinks are different. I'v searched for hours trying to find the answer, haven;t come up with anything, so im now trying to find someone who has upgraded or built his/her own G4 MDD model. FrankOS_Scripting
I'm sure you don't have to upgrade your heatsink. Huges heatsink depend also of the frequency of your CPU. Faster CPU= More heat?!
