I keep seeing people talking about making sure to backup kexts before trying to update, etc. Sounds good, but which kexts? I have been racking my brain to figur eout which kexts I should backup. It seems that many of them are provided by Apple and you would WANT the ones coming in the update, not the backed up version. It seems obvious to backup things like NVinject, stuff not provided by Apple, but then those are probably not going to be overwritten during an update.

So the question remains, which kexts need to be backed before doing an update and why? if they are from apple, why back them up when we should be using the new ones from apple?

Are there some Apple kexts which have been tweaked by us and included in distros like Kalyway's, and those we must backup? If so, what are they?

I have recently created a very vanila Kalyway 10.5.2 install. I checked a few boxes in the installer which installed something, I have no idea whether every kext is the original from Apple or something hacked and included by Kalyway that I need to backup. Obviously, stuff like NVinject and some other things must have been provided by Kalyway. But again, I don't think the update will touch those. Still I wish there was a list of specifically what they are so that I can back them up and restore after the update.

How can I get the list of kexts or other system files that I need to make sure to backup before and update and restore after the update. I think restoring the entire Extensions dir is obviously not the correct response, so how does one know which kexts need to be backed up and restored other than something that they did manually like put some other 3rd party SMBIOS or something(which I didn't). ??

roughly. i have not fully read your post but got the gist.

On my system updated directly from 10.5.1 -> 10.5.4 using the update downloaded directly from apple using the netkas method. (i backed up the whole extentions as precaution)

The only files i need to restore for full functionality are

AppleHDA.kext

AppleSMBios.kext

all other modified .kexts and injects are not affected

hope this helps

That's very helpful thanks. How did you determine that these were the only ones you needed to backup? Were you using any of the following options during the Kalyway install:

TimeMachine fix

USBPCGen patch

I notice from the kalyway readme some mention about the following, which seems like they might be critical also, no?:

AppleACPIPlatform

AppleAPIC

And what about the mobo chipsets:

AppleNForceATA

AppleOnboardPCATA

AppleVIAATA

AppleGenericPCATA

SiliconImage3132
