I have a widescreen dell laptop and monitor, but I cannot get 1280x800 or 1680x1050 working. I can see two possible solutions to this.

The first is to patch the video card bios to add widescreen resolutions. The utility 915 resolution will do this, but it only supports intel chipsets. I've tried poking around the bios with a hex editor, but so far the only thing I understand is where a few resolution values are, and I haven't had much luck finding anything about video bios structures on the internet.

Another possibility, OS X sets the resolution somewhere upon startup. It might be possible to find where it does this and change the default resolution from 1024x768 to 1680x1050. I'm not sure where to look for this though, maybe in the IOgraphics kext (I forget the exact name, and I'm in widows now). It may be as simple as hex editing two values, but I really don't know anything about how the video resolution is set upon startup, so I can't say for sure.

So those are my ideas, and if you have any others please share them. Widescreen resolution is the only thing holding me back from making OS X my main OS, so I'm really anxious to get this working.
