MICHAELSD
Hey guys, I've gotten everything set up right to get OS X running on my desktop, but I'm getting stuck at "waiting for root device error" on my XPS 720. I'm trying to install it with Kalyway 10.5.2. I tried Googling a few topics on it, but nothing helped. Can anybody on here with a XPS 720 help me out (I knew a few of your on here have one)? Thanks! Here's the specs of my Dell XPS 720 that I'm trying to get Leopard to run on: nForce 680i Motherboard Intel Quad-Core Q6600 2.4GHz Nvidia 8800 GT 512MB VRAM 3GB RAM Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 320 GB 7200RPM HD Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/109267-getting-xps-720-past-waiting-for-root-device-in-kalyway/ Share on other sites

Try using a PATA drive on your system and see if that helps. MICHAELSD
Are there any settings I could change to try to get it to work or do I need to buy a new HD? digitalr0gue
I was able to get past it somewhat by disabling any vista-specific BIOS optimizations. Most notable was HETA, or HEPA, or whatever it's called (it is on my Gigabyte mobo, not sure if it exists in nvidia boards, not using mine anymore.) That got me into the OSX setup, but I was still having issues with reading DVD's on HFS partitions - received numerous read errors during the process. I finally will try a new SATA DVD drive tonight that I am bringing from work (advantages of working in IT I am wondering if the fact I have a Lightscribe drive has anything to do with it. Not sure if the mach kernel can deal with the firmware code natively. If the new SATA drive fails, I have another PATA drive I can try as well. I'll post my results when I get a chance. digitalr0gue
Well, it turns out it was my particular SATA DVD drive (TSS SH-S183L by Tohiba Samsung Storage) - it just doesn't work with the OS X kernel. Swapping it out with my other PATA drive (Sony model) worked like a champ. I have a fully functional Hackintosh on that system now. I would definitely try adding a different drive to your system and see if that helps your problem. MICHAELSD
Would I have to take out the SATA HD or could I just add the PATA and dual boot HDs to get it past "waiting for root device"? digitalr0gue
Would I have to take out the SATA HD or could I just add the PATA and dual boot HDs to get it past "waiting for root device"? dunno. try it with both and see if it works? Never tried it that way, can't vouch for either way. MICHAELSD
It also says NFORCEATA (or something like that) Warning: PHY Connection failed a few times a few steps before saying "waiting for root device". Any ideas? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/109267-getting-xps-720-past-waiting-for-root-device-in-kalyway/#findComment-785220 Share on other sites

"Waiting for root device" issue solved. Hope this can help you. (I'm French and I use google translation) I have exactly the same problem with the patched dvd Kalyway, iDeneb and iAKTOS! My PC is an HP Pavilion a6117, the problem is no matter in what order I plug my SATA cables but I believe it is an option PAHA in the BIOS of my motherboard, I'll try! doomrobo
I have an nvidia graphics card and motherboard (I think.) I don't know what hard drive I have but I'm pretty sure it's a SATA because I'm getting the "still waiting for root device" message. Is there anything I can do regarding the BIOS options to make this work?
