jpxdude Posted February 28, 2006 Share Posted February 28, 2006 Hi All, Firstly I'd like to say thanks to this fantastic site, and forum, for without the input and collective ideas of all users/developers on here, I would not have been able to get this working! Following the main guide on the wiki, I initially procured a tiger image, partitioning my SATA drive, dd'ing across, and using chain0 to reboot. With this, I got as far as the grey Apple logo screen before it would crash with a 'no-go here' type sign. This turned out to be the 'Still waiting for Root Device' error...Ironically, I used my original Tiger disk that I got with my Powerbook, and that managed to semi-boot I then managed to get the Jas 4.2b patched image and stick that on a laptop USB drive, and I was getting the looping restart in 4 different languages error. I realised that since it was reading my DVD drive still during this instance, it was looking for either the DVD drive, or it had some problem with my SATA drive... Entering my bios, I decided to disable all my drives, and voila! I managed to get OS X to boot looking wonderful. Upon entering the bios, I discovered that disabling my SATA controller was the only thing I needed to do to get OSx86 working. So far, I've managed to successfully install MS Office 2004 without a hitch, and opened up Safari (Although I have no working network connection!) to see if I would experience the crash error that many people have...but it opened fine, and I closed it just as gracefully. The only thing that did fail, was the DVD Player, as my video device wasn't found. The things on my machine not working at the moment are: Network Card (Broadcom NetExxtreme Gigabit Ethernet [bCM5751]) Wireless Network Card (Belkin F5D7000UK (Broadcom Chipset)[4320] I think its Rev2) Onboard Sound (Realtek HD Sound [ALC880]) Graphics Card (Powercolor ATI X800GT 256mb PCI-E) There is some slight noticeable tearing, and slowing down if there are a few windows open, or if they are moved around. Also, the resolution is locked to 1024x768. There is no functional sound or networking at present So I come to you good folk to seek some help/guidance in trying to get the last few things working. I have done a search on the things above on the forum, but no clear answers to these yet. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated! My System: Shuttle ST20G5 Athlon 64 3000+ Venice Core (E Stepping) 1GB Crucial Ram Dell USB keyboard PS/2 mouse connected to USB convertor NEC 4550A DVD Super Multi Drive Onboard Graphics (Ati Express 200 NOT IN USE) Network Card (Broadcom NetExxtreme Gigabit Ethernet [bCM5751]) Wireless Network Card (Belkin F5D7000UK (Broadcom Chipset)[4320] I think its Rev2) Onboard Sound (Realtek HD Sound [ALC880]) Graphics Card (Powercolor ATI X800GT 256mb PCI-E) 120gb Diamond Max 9 SATA HD 200gb Diamond Max 10 IDE HD I think thats about it! Network is now up and running now, since I installed an ethernet card that I found laying about in the shuttle box... Now all that needs to work are... Onboard Sound (Realtek HD Sound [ALC880]) Graphics Card (Powercolor ATI X800GT 256mb PCI-E) I'm actually typing from the pseudo-mac right now :-) Any help on these would be most appreciated! Thanks!! The difference is that I have the dual core AMD X2 3800+ so I have to pass "cpus=1" to the kernel when I boot, that way it doesn't stutter all day long. ALC880 sound, Gigabit Ethernet, ATI X800XL Video and SATA not working. Haven't even checked to see if the card reader works. Don't have any cards for it. I am using a 20G IDE hard drive for OSX. The major problem I have, and it may have something to do with the CPU is that it won't shut down or restart. It always hangs at the blue screen with the round progress meter. pip11 Posted March 1, 2006 Share Posted March 1, 2006 I am also using a ST20G5, and I have 10.4.3 8f1111 running fairly well (haven't tried upgrading it yet). Like both of you though, the network and SATA aren't supported (and probably won't be), and I haven't gotten audio working (although it is a low priority for me). I'm also using a GeForce 6600GT, which is a no-go for now. Booting from an external USB drive is working fairly well, though inconvenient thanks to the ST20G5's crappy BIOS. I've been active in threads here and on win2osx to get the on-board Broadcom gigabit ethernet working, with no success. As I posted in another thread here, I think that the simple PCI device string replacing isn't working for the ST20G5 because it uses a different PHY than the BCM5701 chips that the driver was written for. I noticed the other day that the current Power Mac G5s are using the AppleBCM5701Ethernet driver to power their dual-port controllers, which at least confirms that it should work with PCI Express cards. My ST20G5 has the Broadcom BCM5789 chip inside--do both of you also have the same chip? I believe it is functionally equivalent to the BCM5751, but it'd be nice to know. Could you both tell me what Windows (or Linux) reports your network cards as, and the PCI IDs (can be found in Device Manager, go to Properties for the device, under Details, and type in what it says after VEN_ and DEV_). jpxdude Posted March 1, 2006 Author Share Posted March 1, 2006 Thanks for replying! You are right about the crappy bios, it tends to be quite fiddly to play with. I got my network working by installing a cheap Realtek 8139 PCI card inside,...although inconvenient, it is tiny and does the job! I tried messing around with the sound by following some of the guides for the ALC880 around the forums. I tried editing the info.plist file in a couple of kexts (appleHDAcontroller, and the AC97 (I forget the name)) but no joy... I went to device manager to check out my hardware ID which gave me a device ID of BCM5751, I can't remember the whole details of the string and I am at work right now, so I will reply and post the details later. Interestingly, using the Broadcom software, the onboard network card is registered as a PCI-E 1x card. I don't know if that is of any relevance? I'm happy to say that this is working almost perfectly with my X800GT Give it a go Also, don't forget to amend your com.Apple.Boot.plist file to include your graphics mode... Now the only thing to get working...is my sound! Hmm...any takers? For the network, I managed to find an old Realtek 8139 Ethernet PCI card laying around that worked straight away...doesn't seem like anyone has a definate answer about the onboard broadcom network...so now, I have everything working, other than sound! For the graphics, I used the Koverg patch mentioned previously in the thread which sorts out any PCI-E ATI graphics card to have accellerated graphics, but can't do resolution changes, so that is set manually on the com.apple.boot.plist file. I did try to install via a 200gb IDE HD, but it only picks it up in disk utility as 120gb drive, and doesn't see any other partitions :-/ so I'm still stuck with my USB HD which works fine, but seems to slow down the OS a bit, especially when trying to play a video full screen, or completely jerkiness playing any dvd. So far, all is working other than sound. I tried various guides and tinkering as specified in other threads around, but no go... Next week, I'll be receiving a USB Audio card/stick which only cost under £5/$10 which I will test, as apparently USB audio cards are known to work well... I will update with progress! If anyone has any idea on the broadcom network and sound, post away Good Luck! @Diabolik Sleep seems to be working for me in 10.4.5, although i've found it tends to knock out the mouse, keyboard or both frequently. I have both my mouse and keyboard running via USB, and to remedy this, I just unplug which ever has been knocked out for about 5 secs, and plug it back in, then it finds itself eventually.
