VMWare & Resize HFS+

Hi all,

I know this has been discussed at length, but I have spent several days on it, and read every thread here and on other sites about resizing, but nothing has worked for me.

I have 10.4.7 running under vmware (was a vmdk file to start with). I want to install xcode, but there isn't enough room, so I have been trying to resize the partition. I have tried:

Creating new drive, attach to VMWare, Install Darwin, Use DiskUtillity to Restore the original to that one. This would always crash at boot (not just hang, an actual crash requiring a reboot).

Tried creating a new drive, attach to VMWare, partition and restore, then reboot and set bootable and type to AF using command line. Reboot, removed original, but nothing happens at all (not even the darwin loader).

Clone the exsiting drive and tried resizing it when booted up from the first one (so the 2nd one was no longer the primary drive). When I did that with DiskUtil it wipe the drive, iPartition would not recognise it and using the diskutil resizeVolume command gave an error.

Tried restoring the cloned & resized drive (resized with DiskUtil), but would also not boot (black screen, no darwin).

Can anyone suggest how I might go on from here? I'm fine on the command line. I am using Linux as my Host operating system. I don't want to make a dual-boot machine.

I'm at a loss. Most of these I have tried several times, some of them take hours to complete :-(

Thanks in advance.
