How should I format a 3tb RAID 0 drive?

I have a sil3124 pci card to which I used to have two 500gb drives formatted as NTFS and configured as RAID 0 which worked fine. Both Windows and OS X 10.6 could read/write to the drive (using Tuxera NTFS), even in 64 bit using the newest drivers from silicon image.

I have since upgraded each drive to 1.5TB and I created a RAID 0 set in Windows 7 using GUID partition and NTFS format. However, when I booted to OS X I would get an error saying that it could not recognize the drives. So I then created a RAID 0 set using Disk Utility in OS X with GUID partitions and Tuxera NTFS format using disk utility. This created a drive that could be read/write by OS X, no problem. But when I booted into Windows, even with MacDrive installed, Windows 7 did not recognize the drive as a RAID 0 format. It would list them in Disk Management but there was no way to mount the drive. (I also tried HFS Journaled, to no avail.) I have several other HFS-j drives that Windows 7 does recognize (through MacDrive). And on the OS X side, I have several NTFS drives that OS X works with just fine (single drives which are 1.5tb or less).

Anyone have any ideas how I can create a 3 terabyte RAID 0 set so that works in both Windows and OS X?

Thanks!

i seen something strange with 7 .. hidden 100 mb system reserved part in begining is created.. but if that drive is plugged in from usb adapter to 7.. it couldnt enable it!

had to boot linux and erase the partition of 100mb

btw GUID ntfs ? should be mbr

try MBR ntfs in xp repair console (with f6 raid driver for sil 3124) :( or hirens boot cd or ubcd4win after u create raid in the sil3124 menu screen

or even linux live on usb or cd. but your working prior likely was mbr ntfs.. not guid ntfs.

MBR? I thought there was a 2 terabyte limit.

But I think I have a copy of XP, I'll give your suggestion a try.

Thanks.

if you have 2 x 1.5 terrabytes. u can make raid 1 and stays at 1.5 not 3.

to me raid is a waste of time so i cant help much as i have limited experience with it.

dont forget to try linux live from ubs or cd.. gparted.

but first make raid in sil bios.

I created a RAID 0 set using the SilImage Bios (I hit F4 during boot). I then booted into my Windows XP CD and hit F6 but when it came up to installing 3rd party drivers, it did not list my card or drives. So I went to Windows 7 and created the RAID 0 set with the Silicon Image RAID manager (which is how you're supposed to do it these days). I then booted into XP, and again, the drive did not show up.

I then created a RAID 1 (mirrored) set, 1.5tb MBR partition in W7. When I boot into OS X it shows up as two separate drives, just as if I had not created a RAID set at all. Disk Util does not recognize a RAID set either.

I suppose you're right, I could just go with the two drives separate but there has to be a way to make this 3tb RAID 0 work with both OS.

I don't have those other programs you wrote of, I'm going to google them and try those paths out.

Thanks again.
