Mac thinks it's a MacBook Pro

I've successfully installed snow leopard on my desktop. When I check "About This Mac" it says

Model Name: MacBook Pro

Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1

This is a problem because I need to run a few programs that work on Power PC.

I searched the net and people had opposite problems that mac thought it was a power PC and a solution involved something with apple bios kext. Can someone please help me make this mac think its a Power PC?

There's also Rosetta...

The first time you try to run a PowerPC app, you will be automatically prompted to install Rosetta. Or you can install manually from the Optional Installs on the Snow Leopard DVD.

Woops forgot about Rosetta. Thanks Ruger.

Of course it depends if the app is written for OS X PPC or OS 9 (or earlier) PPC

I was trying to run Final Cut Pro 7 but it quits unexpectedly. I have searched around with no solutions.

I wanted to try Final Cut Pro 5 and at first it said I needed Rosetta so I've already tried that. Now it tells me that I don't have the necessary hardware to install. My guess is because it was meant for power pc.

I will try SheepShaver and see if that works.

According to sheepshaver guides, SheepShaver cannot run 9.1 or later.

That doesn't work for me. I get an Alert message saying "Your Computer does not have the hardware required to run this software. See the read me for details."

This is very strange that it runs on my laptop that mac identifies as a power pc and not on my desktop that mac identifies as a macbook pro.

Apparently you can run Sheepshaver up to 9.2.2 using 9.1 & 9.2 helpers.

I use Sheepshaver because the program I use (Electronic Workbench) was never ported to OS X, in fact the last mac version was released in 1995 (i believe)

You can try creating or editing a smbios.plist. "Lizard App" can help. There are lots of good guides for it including http://prasys.info/2009/09/guidecreating-y...n-smbios-plist/

Personally I would try to get an OS X version of Final Cut Pro running. TThere a lots of threads about it http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&...mp;aql=&oq= . Is your video acceleration working & do you run a patched kernel?

Thanks, I'll look into those.

The install im trying to do is for my desktop. The graphics card is an Nvidia geforce 7900 gs. I am using a patched kernel. It is named something version 10.6. It was installed from the SnowLeo distro. This could be the problem.

I am not saying it will fix the problem but it is worth a try. Yes if you are using a patched kernel (eg legacy_kernel), rename it mach_kernel and change entry in your com.appleBoot.plist.

Can you please be a bit more specific on how to change the kernel name.

When I was installing the os, it did say mach_kernel. But I chose a kernel to install which I'm guessing is a patched kernel.

To change name of kernel. First if it is invisible you must make it visible. In terminal type

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE

then type

killall Finder

Then right click kernel-Get Info & rename mach_kernel

To hide files again - defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE

To edit Boot.plist

In terminal type

sudo nano /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist

Edit the line so it looks like this

<key>Kernel</key>
<string>mach_kernel</string>

type Control-X to save and exit.

IF you don't have a com.apple.Boot.plist in an Extra folder then the command in terminal would be

sudo nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

[Don't edit the com.apple.Boot.plist with text edit or you MAY corrupt it. Use the Nano editor as described or Property List Editor]

Thank you for the guide.

I followed your instructions but couldn't get past this instruction:

"Then right click kernel-Get Info & rename mach_kernel"

I don't have this file to right click. I have 2 files showing up after the commands. They are .DS_Store and .localized.

However, I found a file called "mach_kernel" the root of the drive where mac is installed.

Thats right , that is where kernel(s) are, in the root of drive.

Post the contents of you com.apple.Boot plist (you can use text edit this time if you like because you are just copying the text, not doing any edits)

Did you already edit the boot.plist, if so what did it say before you edited it. And which com.apple.Boot plist are we talking about ? In /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration? or in /Extra?

If we are talking about the hardware in your signature I would have thought it would run a vanilla kernel anyway. But you indicated that you were running a patched kernel.

EDIT post a pic of your hard drive root

It seems like I am using mach_kernel and the plist already said thats it's mach_kernel.

I installed with SnowLeo and a I chose a kernel from the selections.

I have a retail version and I'll be installing this soon and I'll see if this fixes my problem.
