Gt 240 and via vt1708s - would it be better to upgrade first?

So from all the forums I have seen discussing these two pieces of hardware, the people that have gotten them running, all have snow leopard on their machine. I was instructed to get things working before I upgrade, but I was wondering if the running system has any effect on hardware compatibility and since my equipment is newer and "works" on snow leopard, if i should just upgrade first?

 

Any ideas?
