You will need:

  • Advent 7104 / Quanta EF6 Laptop
  • iPC OSx86 Universal 10.5.6 PPF5 (Final)
  • Broadcom 43xx MiniPCI card

Burn the iPC image as slowly as your DVD writer will allow, to good quality media, and boot it. This takes around 10 minutes. When you are able, use Utilities -> Disk Utility to repartition the disk to MBR with one Mac OS X Journalled partition. Exit the Disk Utility and keep going through the install process until you can click the Customise button. Choose the following options:

  • iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Base System (already selected)
  • iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Intel AMD SSE2 SSE3 -> Kernels -> 9.5.0 Voodoo Kernel
  • iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Intel AMD SSE2 SSE3 -> Drivers -> Video Drivers -> Intel -> Intel GMA900
  • iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Intel AMD SSE2 SSE3 -> Drivers -> Chipset Drivers -> Intel ICHx IDE/SATA Drivers
  • iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Intel AMD SSE2 SSE3 -> Drivers -> Audio -> Other Audio Drivers -> AC97 Audio
  • iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Intel AMD SSE2 SSE3 -> Drivers -> Ethernet -> Realtek R1000
  • iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Intel AMD SSE2 SSE3 -> Drivers -> Wireless Drivers -> Broadcom Driver
  • iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Intel AMD SSE2 SSE3 -> Drivers -> Power Management -> AppleACPIBatteryManager
  • iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Intel AMD SSE2 SSE3 -> Drivers -> Power Management -> AppleACPIPowerSource
  • iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Intel AMD SSE2 SSE3 -> Fixes and Patches -> Seatbelt.kext 10.5.5
  • iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Intel AMD SSE2 SSE3 -> Fixes and Patches -> PS/2 Device Support -> PS/2 Keyboard Fix

When Mac OS X has finished installing, and starts to reboot remove the DVD from the drive.

Leopard should now boot and, after showing you a video of 'Welcome' in 50 different languages, and playing you a tune, it will ask you the standard first time boot questions. If you took my advice and used the Broadcom 43xx wireless card you should now have fully working Airport, however on the setup part of the first boot it may not be possible to set a default wireless network. If this happens then use the ethernet for now.

You should now have a fully working HacBook with Quartz accelerated graphics, sound, working sleep and Airport for wireless. Note that if you stayed with the Intel PROSet/2200BG card, Airport will not work and you will have to connect to wireless networks manually a third party utility.

One issue I found is that Airport sometimes won't turn on. This is because although the card is enabled in the BIOS, the soft switch is 'off'. To fix this boot into the BIOS setup utility, press [FN] + [F2], save and let Mac OS boot again. All should be fixed.
