I am trying to install Darwin X86 8.0.1 as found on http://opensource.apple.com/static/iso in VirtualBox 3.2.6 on Mac OS X 10.5.7. My computer is a 2009 Intel iMac. Please don't ask me why I want to do this, I just do. When I enable EFI with VirtualBox all I get is a confusing shell which I have decided not to use. I figured out that I can use GParted to format the empty virtual hard drive as a GPT drive with an HFS+ partition flagged as "boot".

Now, I have two paths I can take:

  1. Install/use an EFI emulator like PC-EFI or Empire EFI.
  2. Install boot-132.

My problem with the EFI emulators things is that all I get is an interface that is straight forward at all. Remember this is an empty virtual hard drive, so I can't use a pre-installed OS X to install these EFI emulators. These ISOs do not offer a way to install them into the hard drive. Nor do I know how to place the files themselves such as "boot" or "boot0" into the hard drive. Can someone please explain to me how to do this and then how to properly install Darwin X86 8.0.1 onto my virtual machine?
