Multiple Video Cards

Currently, I'm running an X58A-UD3R system with a 9800 GT video card and dual monitors. I have the DVI and VGA ports connected to the two monitors and I like it that way.

However, I want to connect the computer to my projector and the HDMI output on the 9800GT doesn't work. I was going to purchase another video card, rather than splitting the signal for the main monitor because they're so cheap and the problems that might arise with handshakes coming back from two different places with different resolutions.

My question is, is it cool to just throw in an 8400 GS and hook it up? The machine should be able to recognize multiple, different video cards without a problem right?
