Hi;

I have a Macbook Pro with Leopard and have never used Time Machine.

I have just bought a new external USB HDD (VERBATIM 1TB) and would like to connect it to carryout a backup. The USB HDD will initially be connected directly to one of my Macbooks USB ports however I have a plan to get either a BELKIN Network USB Hub that enables connection of a USB HDD to an Ethernet Network:

1. If I have initially used a USB HDD connected directly can carry on using it after I opt for a different connection type?

2. Will the mac be able to continue carrying out routine backups when using this kind of connection? (I know that the data transfer rate using this method is restricted to about 25Mbps. (Thats mega bits I believe as opposed to mega bytes)

3. Is there another way to backup supplied with Leopard other than time machine if its going to be a problem.

4. Can you use the same HDD for backing up multiple mac's I.E plug it into one and backup then into another and back that up, using Time Machine or another method.

5. Will Time Machine complain if the HDD is not connected or will it simply keep trying periodically?

6. If the HDD is not constantly connected will this affect the macs performance.
