Khan_Man
A few of us had a good thread going about the Vostro 1720 and it got taken down/lost with no explanation (so far). I’m gonna try and recreate some of the information. I know I’ll forget some stuff. I hope the other folks in the thread will find this one and get involved (again). I remember a member called average started the thread, used pcwiz’s distro picked out some appropriate drivers and got most things working right away. IIRC he also found out that the VoodooHDA driver got the sound out working and that NVdarwin got the video working. The networking divers came of the distro (Broadcom patch and realtekr1000) as did the initial PS2 fixes. I found some PS2 patches that got tapping going on the trackpad and a method to get the trackpad control panel back up. machound figured out that the nVidia 9600m GT string would work for the 9600m GS so we could get rid of NVdarwin. average
I was able to save the old thread to my hard drive. I found it from google's cache of it (i don't know how long that link will work). Here's the post from machound about EFI strings for the graphics card: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No, I didn't do any modifications to Hal50, and I'm not using a DSDT. I did go through many iterations though, starting with an iPC 10.5.6 and then doing a 10.5.7 software update. I then installed Chameleon 2, which is picking up the com.apple.boot.plist file. Here's the link to the source of the 9600M GT efi string: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t=#entry1086872 Here's the source that I compiled with OSX86tools: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x1,0x0)/Pci(0x0,0x0)</key> <dict> <key>@0,AAPL,boot-display</key> <data> </data> <key>@0,built-in</key> <data> </data> <key>@0,compatible</key> <string>NVDA,NVMac</string> <key>@0,device_type</key> <string>display</string> <key>@0,name</key> <string>NVDA,Display-A</string> <key>@0,use-backlight-blanking</key> <data> </data> <key>@1,can-hot-plug</key> <data> </data> <key>@1,compatible</key> <string>NVDA,NVMac</string> <key>@1,device_type</key> <string>display</string> <key>@1,name</key> <string>NVDA,Display-B</string> <key>NVCAP</key> <data> BQEAAAAAAQAGAAAAAAABCwAAAAA= </data> <key>VRAM,totalsize</key> <data> AAAAIA== </data> <key>device_type</key> <string>NVDA,parent</string> <key>model</key> <string>NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT</string> <key>rom-revision</key> <string>test</string> </dict> </dict> </plist> I've also attached a kextstat report. Khan_Man
No, I've never found a way around this iPC booting problem. What I find odd is that retail boots perfectly and iPC doesn't. A few alternatives. -You might try an earlier version of iPC. I know on his web site he has the older ppfs. -Do you have access to another Mac/Hackintosh? USB hard drive? You could try what I did is boot iPC on another machine and load OS X onto an external USB drive, then use that to boot the laptop and clone the drive over. A lot of work but it works. -I'm gonna try booting with grub-dfe.iso and then boot iPC. See if the ram disk fools the USB sleep kext. -Is it possible to boot iPC in safe mode? I wonder if it will load? -x I'm gonna try a few things and report back. I tried the last two items (boot with grub-dfe first and with -x) Neither worked. average, could you tell us a little more about your version of iPC? ukhan
Khan_man, I've tried your exact com.apple.Boot.plist in my Extra folder (and replaced the old one), and it's not working. Chameleon seems to be picking up the file and new resolution at the boot menu, however, when I go into verbose mode on load, the screen just stops after loading everything because I think it cant match the VGA card. I see many errors saying VGA Family Matching failed. I have the same card as you in my Vostro 1720 (GeForce 9600M GS with 512 MB).....I'm perplexed...any ideas? ukhan
I had to take the .kext buried in the .img of the grub-dfe disk and put them in the /Extra/Extensions/ folder. For some reason I don't think Chameleon comes with a decrypter (like dimos (sp?)). Khan Thanks, I'm going to try this tonight. While I followed your instructions for the retail install, one thing that was a problem was that my keyboard wasn't working right after the retail install. As a result, I couldn't do anything. Luckily I had a XxX 10.5.6 Install DVD, so I booted from that, used terminal and copied PS2Controller and PS2Nub kexts from a USB key I had to install PS2controller and PS2Nub to get it to work. Once I got those files in there, I could then proceed.

Khan_Man
Thanks apoirier. I tried fussing with trackpad some more the last couple days. Environment: System 10.5.6 (retail) with Chameleon 2 (rc 431), all ps2 nubs and controllers removed (I hope) from both /S/L/E and from Extra/Extensions. Installed voodooPS2 package 0.98. Removed the voodooPS2 control panel from /S/L/PP, removed the TrackpadPS2Controller.kext from /S/L/E/. Put ab__73 control panel in /S/L/PP. Put ab__73 modified ALPS for 2 Finger Scrolling into /S/L/E/. At this point all of the original voodooPS2 stuff has been replaced, so I think there should be a better install method. I'm still working on it. I think I finally got what driver needs to be where for this to work but I need to test installation. search for voodoo projects, check out the voodoo PS2 stuff. It is close. Keyboard works great. Trackpad pointer, tapping works great. Scrolling. Four finger scrolling works. kind of. I'm talking to AB__13 on the Voodoo projects site. ukhan
Khan_Man...I'm a bit confused as to where i can find ab__73 modified ALPS for 2 Finger Scrolling and related files. Can you please point me to the right direction? I want to get the tapping working as well. Also, I just installed 10.5.8 update no problems through software update. Didn't have to do anything after the install. It worked fully without glitches. Anyone find a way to get the SD card reader working?
Khan_Man
Hi ukhan, Here is what I think it boils down to. -Do the TrackPad preferences pane thing -Remove ApplePS2controller -Remove all PS2nubs (from Extra/Extensions and anywhere else) -install the below kext -reboot -in the Apple System Preferences open up Trackpad pref and enable tapping ----------------- There has also been some developments on the Voodoo projects site concerning SDHCI. I've posted our device IDs hoping somebody will take on the O2micron controller. Seems like most of the current development is on Ricoh controllers. I've also just tried the Chameleon 2 RC2 r640 installer (with the video injector). It works great for our 9600m GS video card. detects it correctly, memory and the benchmarks are much better. Openmark reports 17146 and the OpenGL Extensions Viewer test are much better. So, now we have 3 options for video, NVdarwin, string or r640 injection. ukhan
Right now I have the standard VoodooPS2 kext. Should I remove that too and just do it using your kext? I have the new Cameleon too, but I didn't remove the com.boot.plist file. Should I remove that to see if Cameleon detects the video card? Hi ukhan, Here is what I think it boils down to. -Do the TrackPad preferences pane thing -Remove ApplePS2controller -Remove all PS2nubs (from Extra/Extensions and anywhere else) -install the below kext -reboot -in the Apple System Preferences open up Trackpad pref and enable tapping ----------------- There has also been some developments on the Voodoo projects site concerning SDHCI. ukhan
Actually I've seemed to have answered my own questions. For the trackpad, I took your VoodooPS2Controller.kext and just over wrote the old one I had and put the Trackpad prefs in the lib folder and it worked! As for the new Chameleon Graphics Enabler, I just had to get rid of the EFI string from com.apple.Boot.plist and add in the option for GraphicsEnabler. Attached is the file I used which works beautifully! Thanks a ton! I think the last major thing to fix is the sleep on this laptop. I really miss sleep. Besides sleep and SD card, is there anything else left? com.apple.Boot.plist.txt
Khan_Man
Ya, sleep and SD. I believe there is a way to trick the sleep using DSDT but I haven't had time to pursue it. Something about ICH9 and sleep... To get the SD working we have to overcome the 02micron PCI controller thing which I've never done in OS X and found very few leads. It is almost time to do an updated post install list. Has anybody tried putting the wireless driver into a mkext in the Extra folder? That is the only driver that I worry about not surviving an update. Everything else is Chameleon or voodoo and should survive updates. ukhan
I don't even think you need the wireless driver. I didn't need it, but I have the Dell 1510 Wireless card and was working out of the box...maybe you have different? My update to 10.5.8 didn't need any fixing at all. Khan_Man
I haven't tried SL yet. I just tried out Netkas fakesmc.kext hoping for some sleep for laptop. It boots the laptop but didn't help with sleep issue. Has anybody else tried it? http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=180958 Khan
ukhan
I havent tried that. I finally have my hands on a copy of Snow Leopard. Do you think I can try just doing an upgrade? Or do you think a fresh install is best?
Khan_Man
Any chance of a fresh clean install on an external USB drive? Try it out, see what happens. Khan
