WWDC 2008 Rumor Roundup

Numberzz

The annual World Wide Developer Conference starts tomorrow at 10:00AM(-8:00GMT) with a keynote from Steve Jobs. We don't know exactly what they are going to announce, but, as usual, there are a bunch of rumors to choose from.

iPhone/iPod touch/2.0

There have been rumors swirling around the 3G iPhone since December, and the general consensus is that it will, in fact, be released tomorrow. But wait, will it be thinner? Will it be thicker? Does it have GPS? Does it have a front-facing video camera? Does it ship with 2.0? Does it have a removable battery? Does it have a non-recessed headphone jack? Is it made of plastic? Does it have more than one color? Will it be cheaper? Who knows, but we'll find out on Monday.

Mac OS X 10.6

A few sources have pointed out that Apple is planning on shipping the next version of OS X, 10.6, in January of 2009. Sources also say that developers will be given a preliminary version on Monday to test. It is said that this version will not contain many new features, but will mostly be a release that fixes problems/makes the computer faster.

.Mac/MobileMe

It first started with rumors saying that Apple has purchased me.com for their use of the new .Mac service. TUAW said that .Mac would get a complete revamp, with over the air-syncing and many more enhancements. Strings that included "MobileMe" were found in the iPhone SDK, their website, and OS X 10.5.3.

Live Coverage

I would say that MacRumorsLive has the best live coverage, but that's just my opinion

So what do you think? Tell us in this thread!

Probably not as Apple is always stressing that only one company makes the software and hardware as the reason why macs work smoothly.

Im predicting an Atom based touch pad/tablet to compete with the bunch of cheap atom based mini notebooks. Imagine a 7 to 10 inch tablet, thinner than the macbook air! ( no harm in dreaming)

osx 10.6 will support AMD CPUs..... :)

back in topic, i guess jobs will talk hours about the new iphone, it's too early for 10.6

leopard will last long imho

jobs will start always with 20 mins of his graphs about market,

no wonder will be several speeches from iphone app/videogames developers,

hours of bubbles about iphone app store, iphone new security {censored} and so on

.mac refresh

all available TODAY

oh... and there's one more thing...

If that really happen, Windows will suffer dramatically in market share.

Now... that... would be fun! A real hot torch under Redmond's behinds to do something proper.

Evolution through competition and legal freedom of choice for a user? It would be antibiotics for the pc and champagne for the users! :P

Let's all sing the Vista blues. :)

Opening Os X could bring a lot of consequences, not only for MS ,but Apple. A lot of drivers need to be written and so on ( amd support ) . Would be a hard work for everyone and mac won't be so optimized anymore. If these things are true , we would be very happy. ( and MS would have a competitor already ) . But it can't be, the world is not as easy like this.

By the way... How many hours left ?

Talking about 10.6 so early into 10.5 would be a really bad idea. It could persuade people from waiting. This is exactly what's happening with Windows 7 so apple should have learned from this.

I am not setting my hopes too high about OSX coming to PC's, but it seems like the right moment to do so, if at all. Kick Vista while it's down :)

They can always announce official support only for a subset of existing PC hardware, the most popular ones. I mean, OSX86 guys are pretty good at it, and these are full time dedicated developers at Apple we're talking here. So I think they can pull it off.

Of course it can't be that OS X will accept all hardware all of sudden.

I think Apple will do a light start and only support few PC Hardware.

I'm sure they would not do AMD compatible, only-Intel would do the thing easier plus Apple would get trouble with Intel ( I think there are contracts) if they would release for AMD too. (Since Intel is Cooperating with Intel so flawlessly)

It really can't be made that they bring out every driver for each hardware at release.

PLUS! Apples concept was to make Hardware for software and not vice versa like in windows. Of course releasing OS X for PCs would confilct this enormously BUT Apple could select certain good Hardware among PC Hardware and make the OS only accept those Hardware.

thats what I think

EDIT: if people are surprised of me not handling OSX for PC as a rumor, but a possible move of Apple. Here is the reason and its quite simple: Announcing 10.6 so soon although 10.5 works like a charm IS VERY SUSPICIOUS (+ the fact for dropping PPC)

2nd is NOT CHANGING THE OS NAME COMPLETELY Leopard -> Snow Leopard acts like Apple wants to release same Leopard with only a decisive Addition. So this would be another version of Leopard not a whole new version of OS X

I think the only possibility for OS X in the PC is probably having a contract with Psystar, the only PC maker currently offering OS X.

If you read up on that company it is already a large rumour that Apple in fact owns that company. Just do a little digging and you'll see for yourself.

Is the free update for 10.5 users actually true or is it just a rumour or wish you had?

A wish. Seeing as it's mostly a bug fixing, performancing improving OS it should be provided as patches really. So if they are going to make an OS version with little in the way of new features it should be free. From what I understand OSX 10.1 was a free update for 10.0 owners.
