linuxholgi
Hi all, after reading a lot and exploring the wiki, there are still a lot of questions left. My idea is, to install Mac OSX86 onto my Desktop at home which is actually used as a Linux Server. (SMB, MLDonkey - services which meight also run on OSX) The bad thing is, that I have to buy a new Board (no SSE2 CPU, old P III) and some other Hardware. Maybe the ASROCK P4DUAL-915GL Socket 478 Mainboard and a Celeron CPU. So can I really use OS-X86 this way (on non Apple Hardware) ? Or is it just for playing around a little bit? How good equipped should the system be? Is 512MB RAM and a 2.8 Ghz Celeron enough? --Holger Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/9830-noob-what-can-i-expect/ Share on other sites

Ouch
There are a few threads relating to that mobo and folks experience of it. Major issue you have to check out is networking as support for network cards is limited at best. To be honest there are less complicated ways of setting up linux servers than trying to use a hacked os x installation - since it wasn't designed as a server in the first place - let alone to run on pc hardware. Why not just use a proper release like Gentoo or Slackware, even Fedora if you want an easy life. U.C.
Yes u can run it on non Apple Hardware. Check the HCLs for details. HINT: Goto the Wiki 1gb Ram would be better but 512 is pretty good. As for 2.8 ghz, thts more than enuf Dont know much about networking Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/9830-noob-what-can-i-expect/#findComment-61527 Share on other sites
linuxholgi
Thank your for your replies! I am Linux experienced, cause its my Job. I am a Linux Admin... The OS-X System should be mainly used as a Desktop! But I wouldnt like to have one additional box because I need a SMB drive for my two Laptops at home and a running MLDonkley. I had questions regarding to the performance because it was in VMWare really slow. Ok, then there are no concerns left. Whats the best way to Install? Downloaded a DVD Image which boots in a standard PC and I have the deadmoo vmware Image... Should I install from a (patched) DVD or should I put the deadmoo Image onto the drive??? Ouch
10.4.3 is currently the easiest install, 10.4.4 requires 10.4.3 to install anyway. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/9830-noob-what-can-i-expect/#findComment-61584 Share on other sites
