Hi, been working on Kalyway 10.5.1 for a while now and just have an issue I am hoping someone can help me with.

I have an Intel-chipset motherboard that has hardware RAID on it, and I have a 500 GB RAID 1 array setup on it that I use as my data drive. It's setup in hardware, in the BIOS, so in Windows it only shows up as a single drive, as it is supposed to.

However, when I boot Mac OS, two drives show up on the desktop with the drive label. That's not how I was thinking it should be. I was then guessing that maybe it wasn't a big deal, and that if I copied a file to ONE of the RAID 1 drives it would show up on both, and all would be fine. However, when i tried to copy a file over, it's listed as "read only" permissions. I then noticed that all of my Windows-based drives are like that. I can open/read files from it, but can't write.

So, I guess that's two questions: 1.) What is wrong with the RAID 1 drives and the two drives showing up on the desktop and 2.) How can I and should I make these drives writable (they are NTFS, obviously) and is it safe to do so?

Thanks!!!

The RAID1 array doesn't have Windows on it...just data.

What if the array is formatted as FAT32 versus NTFS?

You could read and write that, but keep in mind that fat32 has file size limitations. Perhaps if you explain to me what you are trying to accomplish, I, or somebody else, can give you some suggestions or alternatives.

with osx you can only read NTFS partition. There are software available that allow read/write...

With your setup the two drives showed up because osx see it as two separate drives....If you try to write to one of the drive, you would screw the RAID up as there will be NO SNYC between the two drives under OSX....

Try to get the OSX driver for the RAID controller card and see if OSX sees ONE DRIVE....
