Wireless issues in 10.4.8

Hi, I installed 0S X 10.4.8 on my thinkpad T42. As reported by lot of people the Wireless(Atheros) card was not recognized. After searching internet for the issue, i added the <string> pci168c,1014</string> in the proper place and wireless card was recognized. Here's where my problems started. As soon as i turn on Airport, the machine becomes immensley slow(So slow, it takes 2 seconds for character to appear after typing). It recognizes the wireless router and when i try to connect after entering the WEP key, The machine panics(Your machine needs to be restarted message). I tried disabling ipV6 like someone suggested, but to no avail. I was wondering if anyone has seen this issue and better still have a solution.I did try searching the forum, but was unable to find anythingThanks in advance.Qui Sorry to reply to my own post.
