We get a lot of the same questions and topics from noobs. That is fine, we've all been there.

How can I (we) help them ......... and clean up the redundant thread problem at the same time ? Do we have a noob guide ? Would a tutorial thread for them help ? What should be in it ?

If we need one ...... I think it should be a short, general, not too specific, information thread about:

1. What they're getting into: Big pros and big cons.

2.How to use this board to find:

The most important hardware.

If their hardware is supported. (and drivers)

What is the best hardware for osx.

Which are the best install versions right now (no links)

Dual boot solutions.

How to update.

Help please.

See the 'Tutorials (The Genius Bar)' forum, all of the stickies at the top of the forum are the answer to your question. I do think they should be linked in the polluted forums, though--in one way or another. Just not in a "Read this before posting" thread. We all know people ignore those, they have to be eye-catching.

i think we definitely do. While we have all the answers to specific problems, we have nothing that answers the general stuff, like how to get started. this is why i wrote one.

originally i posted it in installation or something, which was probably ta bad place to pu tit. so, if you think its worth it, i will post it again in tutorials. here is the link:

if you guys think its good, please comment/ tell me to post it in the tutorials section.

Yes put it in tutorials. This is excellent. Now I won't have to write one.
I'm making a noob FAQ right now. It'll be up in the Tutorials section hopefully sometime today.IM DONE THE NOOB FAQ:http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...view=getnewpost
Wow these are both far better than anything I would write.

And I know it can be annoying to hear people request information that we all know they should just search for, but I know that sometimes it is hard to find things on this forum using its search function. It doesn't accept every search term, and it doesn't seem to get the obvious. Therefore, I think we need to tell those noobs to use google to search insanelymac.com, not just the world wide web, like such:

<search topic here> site:www.insanelymac.com

While this is old news to most of us, I know many people do not use this or just don't know about it. I personally use this over the forum search as it yields much better results, or sometimes it is the only way to get any kind of result.

My 2 cents...

Searching doesn't always help. Take AppleHDA Patcher for example. It has instructions. "Drag and drop a linux codec dump into AppleHDA Patcher icon" What kind of instructions is that? It leaves the Hackintosh noobs like myself without a single clue on how to get it working right. I have of course posted my question and hope to have it solved but things like the AppleHDA Patcher need a little better instructions or you will end up with (what you view as) stupid questions.

that is my point exactly, i have no problem with your questions. my only point was that we should merely give those people having a hard time finding information a better way to search for it. i have been here for a long time and have a hard time finding info i know is here. trust me, i am on your side.
