Hey everyone need some help here! I have a Dell Dimension 8100, it has a Pentium 4 1.3Ghz Willamente processor without SSE3. When OS X first was able to install on a PC, I had no issues. I used the Phenix download of 10.4.1, patched it and installed first try.

I've since formatted due to the lack of universal binaries but recently downloaded macosx_10.4.3_8f11111_for_dtk_userdvd.img. I applied the Jas 4.2 patch to it as well and all Md5sum's check out fine. I'm having trouble when I try to install though. I get the screen saying press enter to install which I do. I get the gray apple screen and the spinning ball. I then get the blue screen and a cursor which changes to a beach ball after a minute or so. I get the cursor back, and then it disappears and my computer just reboots. I'm not sure if it's that PAE issue or not, but on the compatability list, it does show someone with the 1.4ghz version of my processor running OS X fine with the Jas 4.2 patch.

Is this what happens if its a PAE issue? From my understanding, if it was, I wouldn't be able to even get this far. Vmware under Windows does the same thing as well, goes to that place then reboots, even with the paevm = true flag turned on. If this isn't it, I'm curious what else it could be, since it worked fine before. Only thing I've changed since then is that I had a Geforce 5200 32mb card and now have a radeon 9250 128mb. Thanks so much.

I have the exact same computer and the exact same problem. So it's not your video card. Have you tried loading the 10.4.3 patched dvd on another computer? I would if I could.

I'm thinking it might be something with RDRAM. There's a forum thread from a little while back with a couple of complaints about a similar problem (it gets to the blue screen right before the installer).

I was also curious to see if there was a way to install besides using a dvd. For 10.4.1 I basically extracted all the files from the image onto my mac, then put the hard drive into the dell, and it just booted up tiger without having to go through the installer. I posted an article about this problem, got more than 200 views, but no replies!

I'll let you know if I get it to work. Sorry I can't solve your problem.

Here is a screenshot of what actually happens in verbose mode. Anyone know what it means?

Not sure what those codes mean, but here's a couple thoughts:

1) How did you put the JaS DVD together?

2) Which patches did you apply to the kernel & how?

That's a start - you probably need to go to win2osx and look in the patches threads for the full discussion on maxxuss' work for sse2 procs and which patches to use.

I think I may have found the issue here- can anyone please confirm whether or not they were using NO NX patched native DVDs?

The Dimension 8100 does not have NX support. Thoughts from anyone in the community?

My understanding (and use) of the kernel used for those patched DVDs is that they already had all the patches applied. If you head over to maxxuss' blog and read the instructions there, he mentions the need to sometimes use his bootloader (a java app he put together). This might be one of those times... Having said that, my Dell 8400 needed both the NoNX & the CPUID patch under 10.4.3.
