I recently acquired (lucked up) on a Powerbook G4. 1Ghz, 512 mb of ram. I have a extra set of OSX DVD's that my friend had laying around his house never used before. I booted up the laptop with the first cd and get an error message "hanging in there" when it boots. What is my problem. I'm new to Macs. I know that the DVD's came with a mackbook.

Thanks,

Benjamin

Hi Benjamin

The Powerbook G4 you bought uses a Motorola/IBM/Whatever PowerPC Processor. This is a different architecture than the one on a MacBook, which uses Intel Processors. Apple made the switch from PowerPC processors to Intel processors in 2006.

You can, however, still use your Powerbook G4 with leopard and most applications, since most binaries are "Universal", which means they are compiled for PowerPC AND Intel processors. The system DVD which came with the MacBook isn't, however.

The solution is to buy a retail Leopard DVD for $129, and your ready for the mac experience.

P.S. I have a Powerbook G4 1Ghz myself and I can tell you although the performance is not the best, it is still very usable. However, maybe you should upgrade to 1GB of RAM, or if you have an aluminum PB, 2GB of RAM. Have fun!
