Hi,

I was wondering something. I have tried to install OSX86 loosely following the directions here:

http://www.profit42.com/guides.php?id=1

I constantly had problems with HFS+ partition errors and corrupted MBRs. I finally was able to put my computer back the way it was before I tried all this, but now I only have windows xp. I looked at the directions in the guide again (since they added screenshots), and I discovered what I did wrong.

In the install guide it says that you should use partition magic to shrink the windows partition first, and then use diskpart to create a new primary partition with flag af. I was using partition magic to create the new partition. I haven't tried to install again, because I don't want to risk screwing up my primary computer right now.

Basically, my quesiton is why can't you use partition magic to create the new partition??? You can set flags in partition magic, so what's the deal?

From my experience, PartitionMagic doesn't know the correct format (AF) for an HFS+ partition. You're better off leaving the free space, or creating some sort of partition there, and then when you boot from the DVD, use Disk Utility to re-format the partition you created. Mac OS X will of course format it correctly. Then install onto that partition.

Be aware that when OS X formats that partition and writes the MBR, it will screw up your existing boot record. Use Acronis or some other boot loader to correct it, and be able to dual-boot.

Is it possible that if I use the exact method detailed in the link above, that I might have success? I've personally had HFS+ Partition Errors, as well as failures using the chain0 method, and I'm kinda frustrated by now.

I think so. I personally did not use diskpart, but you can follow it completely. Either way, formating the target disk through the OS X installation tool will get you a working partition. Also note that the chain0 method does not work with 10.4.3, only with 10.4.1.

Thanks for telling me that so I don't spend more time trying to get it working. I have read through a lot of pages, but I haven't read that before.
