(MoC)
Hello, I just recently installed a JaS 10.4.8 distro on my HP D530 and I'm having graphics issues. I'm stuck at 1024x768x32@60hz! It is very annoying and I have a monitor that support 1440x900. Is there anyway I can force a resolution or is there a driver I can get? I've been googleing and looking all over the forums all day and I can't find any help. I've tried SwitchResX so far and it did not work. So please help! craigusoz
Start the machine, press F8 to get boot options (you may have to add a time out period to be able to do that - see here:OSX86 Tips and Tricks ) Type ?video and enter - available video modes will be displayed. If the bootup screen says vesa 3.0, you can specify a screen refresh rate. The link above also shows you how to specify resolution at boot. If you want to use the Intel driver, you will have to downgrade to 10.4.1 .
(MoC)
Yeah, I tried the .com boot plist. No avail. EDIT: Removed Something!!
craigusoz
Yeah, I tried the .com boot plist. No avail. Uh - huh. But did you do ?video at boot to see what modes are actually available ?
(MoC)
Yes, I can support a maximum 1920x1440x32 with this i865. I'm now running at 1280x1024 and can't get higher than that on my widescreen (1440x900) LCD monitor. I was wondering if there was a way to force resolutions other than the plist! craigusoz
I was wondering if there was a way to force resolutions other than the plist! Not as far as I know, unless you are running a .kext for your graphics hardware. Unfortunately the available one for intel graphics will not work in versions later than 10.4.1 (again, as far as I know).
(MoC)
Yeah, thanks for the help but I'm stuck here lol. I used to use 1600x1200 in Whinedoze XP before I forced widescreen. So, I wish I knew why my monitor was annoying me!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll try some commandline boots
Sabr
I entered this at boot: "Graphics Mode"="1680x1050x32" and it made the whole boot process run at that resolution. I guess you could try "Graphics Mode"="1440x900x32".
craigusoz
That is a good way to test what graphics modes will be supported, but you will only be able to specify available vesa BIOS modes that are listed with the ?video command. If you ask for an unsupported mode, you will get the default 1024x768x32 at 60 Hz. If you have a vesa 3.0 video BIOS, you can set the refresh rate as well by doing something like: "Graphics Mode"="1280x1024x32@85"

If you ask for an unsupported mode, you will get the default 1024x768x32 at 60 Hz. Actually, this is incorrect. the ?video command only works with certain kernels, and often doesn't list all possible modes, even when it does work. In a lot of cases, trial & error with setting resolutions higher than what you are looking for will get it to fallback to the desired resolution. (do this at the boot prompt, not in com.Apple.boot.plist until you find one that works) this is not an exact science. As far as I know, 1440x900 is not a valid VESA mode, so you may be stuck with 1280x1024, although it appears from the post above that the darwin default driver supports some non-standard modes. oh, and for goodness sake don't go to 10.4.1 even in that, getting the 830 kext to detect & work was hit-n-miss at best. (MoC)
I fond those drivers and gave it a shot. Nope, and the ?video gives no widescreen resos. I'm soon gonna get a NVIDIA 6200FX (1/2 Height) and in the meanwhile I'll live with it. I'm gonna try some other kexts now!

Thanks Hagar - I wasn't aware of that.
