This should get you a full working native install with a Dell E520. I use my E520 as my main system. Rock-solid UNIX stable, and all hardware works perfect. I assume you are running Windows. This tutorial will give you a Mac system. Don't try to install Leopard on your E520's yet. It took hackers a long time to get by this model's non-supported motherboard. The patched leopard dvds aren't ready for this compter type at the time of writing. For dual-boot, see bottom.

Compatable Hardware:

DELL E520

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU

Nvidia 7300 LE (for other vid cards, search the wiki for which driver to use)

Onboard Audio & Ethernet

Dell-Installed Firewire Card (Or 90% of non-dell manufactured firewire cards)

What You Need:

GParted Live CD ISO - search Google

Uphuck 1.4i r3 OS X Install DVD ISO - find and download from The Green Demon

Sigmatel 9227 Drivers (ALCinject.kext, AppleHDA.kext)- search this forum for HDA Patcher, its Tarunga's post. Download stac9227_83847618.zip from the bottom of the 1st post.

IOPCCardFamily.kext - get it at http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...mp;#entry203992

MagicISO - search Google

A Black DVD+/-R

A Black CD+/-R or second DVD+/-R

1. Once you have all components, install MagicISO. Put the Sigmatel Drivers and the IOPCCardFamily.kext on a CD, USB Drive or other portable media.

2. Back up all your sh*t to removable storage!

3. Open the GParted ISO in MagicISO, insert either a blank CD or DVD, and click Burn CD (or DVD).

4. Use a low write speed and burn the disk, remove once done.

5. Insert a blank DVD. Open the Uphuck ISO in MagicISO and burn the DVD in the same way, but with THE LOWEST write speed you can. This pretty much guarentees a good final install disk.

6. Take out the new Uphuck DVD and put the GParted CD back in. Reboot.

7. In BIOS, boot from the disk (When the DELL logo loads and the blue bar is loading, "Press F12 for Boot Menu" or something along those lines appears in the top right. Press the button it says to for the Boot Menu).

8. In the Boot Menu screen, go to cd-drive and hit enter.

9. Now you should boot into a grey screen with a menu. Select any option. The third one down works well for me. It will load some stuff and prompt you for language and keyboard setup. It may ask you to select a video driver and resolution. Follow its instructions and use the VESA driver and the recommended resolution.

10.Now you should end up in a windows-ish application called GParted. This is actually a Linux program running from the Live CD you just burned.

11.FOR DUAL-BOOT GO TO DUAL-BOOT SECTION AT BOTTOM, THEN COME BACK TO STEP 16, SKIP STEPS 12-15

12.Delete all entries in the white box with the delete button in the tool-bar. WARNING! THIS RESULTS IN YOUR COMPUTER BEING WIPED CLEAN! THIS IS GOOD IF YOU HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED BACKED UP IN REMOVABLE STORAGE AND YOU JUST WANT TO RUN OS X.

13.Now right-click in the empty space listed in the white box and select New.

14.Format it as a FAT32 partition.

15.Press Apply in the toolbar.

16.Right-click the new FAT32 partition and select Manage Flags. Put a check in the BOOT box.

17.Now exit GParted. Then double-click the red-X box. Select eject and reboot. Your disk will come out. Switch it with the Uphuck disk and close the tray.

Gparted will do some stuff and your computer will reboot.

18.Use the same method as STEP 7 to boot the DVD.

19. Darwin should now load. (if it doesn't, their is either a problem with the ISO you downloaded or the way you burned it).

20. It will prompt you to press any key to load OS X Installer. Do it. It will take 10-20 minutes for the Installer to load. Sometimes longer.

21. Once it loads, select your language. Press continue, then again until you get to "Select Destination."

22. NOTHING IS THERE! OH NO! Just kidding. In the bar at the top, go to utilities -> Disk Utility

23. Let it load. At the top of the left-side box is you hard disk. Under is your FAT32 partition. Click it. Be careful not to select your windows partition if you still have one (dual booters). Check that the partition information at the bottom of the application says FAT32.

24. Go to erase. Name it something cool and select MAC OS Extended (Journaled). Hit erase.

25. Now exit Disk Utility. In the installer, your new "Volume" (what Mac-heads call partitions) appears. Click it and hit continue.

26. Now select the following in the various lists:

Main system

VGA->Nvidia->Titan (if you're using a vid card other then nvida 7300LE, use the recommended driver from the wiki)

SATA Support

IONetworkingFamily.kext from the Networking list

USB, PS2, Azalia,

Intel SpeedStep

AppleSMBIOS.kext

Front Row Patch

27.Install, then reboot. It is worth while to let the installer check your disk.

28.Now you should boot into OS X! Congrats! Apple has a vid ready to greet you. YES!

29.To get audio, drag the sigmatel kexts to your desktop from your storage.

30.Click Finder->System->Library->Extensions

31. Drag the ALC Kext, then the HDA kext into the extensions folder. Type in your password when asked.

32. Repeat with the IOPCCardFamily.kext

33. In apps-> utilities open terminal

34. Type: (press enter after each line)

sudo -s

(type your password)

chown -R root:wheel /system/library/extensions

rm /system/library/extensions.kextcache

kextcache -k /system/library/extensions

reboot

35. Your done! YAAAA!

Nice! It is well worth the 35 steps! I get pure joy in telling you I am writing this tutorial from a Dell box running OS X. Now you need to setup your audio in system preferences (as well as everything else)! Just change the sound to use line out instead of digital out. You can import your sh*t and everything should now work. A few suggestions:

-Change the CTRL key to the special apple option key in system prefs ->keyboard & mouse->mod keys

-Check out Front Row, its really cool - just hit CTRL + ESC (if u changed the CTRL key as above)

-DEFINATLY DISABLE ALL SLEEP FUNCTIONS except monitor sleep. Otherwise you will have to restart all the time. It's not really supported on this computer.

-This installer doesn't include Apple Mail. I suggest using Thunderbird Email. Its free and made by Mozilla!

-For those Video Editors: To get Final Cut Pro to work, you have to uninstall Qmaster AFTER installation of the full studio, then use Spotlight to get rid of all straggling Qmaster files. Reboot and it will work.

DUAL BOOTERS!!!!!

In Gparted:

1. Right-click your main Windows partition in the white box. Select Resize.

2. Decrease the size to whatever. Make sure their's still enough room for any files you (stupidly) left on that partition, including the OS files.

3. Now there's two entries. Right-click the new EMPTY SPACE and select New.

4. Make it a FAT32 partition.

5. Hit Apply in the tool-bar.

6. Continue from step 16 in main tutorial.

This will result in an unharmed windows OS existing peacefully with an OS X install. When you reboot, you will get a Boot Selector thru Darwin,

which allows you to select which OS to boot. To configure the Darwin Boot Loader in detail, search this forum for more information. I am almost 100% sure the default waits 4 seconds for you to choose an OS, then automatically boots into OS X.

Nice work but you really didn't need to work so hard.

macdotnub 10.4.10 dvd boots on e520, installs, but you do need to remember to click sata and ich8r drivers.

Although I did not get onboard ethernet to work; I used a tulip card.

Wmarsh: I tried to install with the kalyway, worked but no ethernet, firewire and cs3 & final cut studio crash like a bit*h. Uphuck is much mor stable.

Glen: when you reboot for the first time, what does the computer say? The last line of text the bios prints is important. Are you using an e520 box? What kernal (install DVD) did you use? I'll check back in an hour, if you reply by then, we can probably fix this today.

Thanks thedude9,

I did try in my E520 and it did NOT work ;)

I have additional SATA HDD attached and also External USB IDE Hdd.

I tried with both and it didn't work. 'No root device can be found'

In BIOS I have disabled my inital SATA HDD that came with PC (Windows)

I will try the Kalyway and see how it goes...

Cheers

You are right about kalyway; it uses 10.3 kernel. Also won't run rosseta, so Word is unusable.mac.nub uses 10.1 kernel. very stable.
I can also confirm that the macdotnub version 10.4.10 DOES work natively on the E520. Has anyone here successfully upgraded to Leopard on the E520?
I copied ToH install dvd to an external drive as it will not boot off dvd. Successfully ran install but so far cannot get into gui in installed system.

wmarsh,

are you getting the "waiting for root device" error? i originally got this error when trying to install 10.4.10 and went into the bios and either disabled or enabled the RAID support and it worked fine. however, this solution does not seem to work for leopard. no matter what, I am still getting the "waiting for root device" error. can you get past this?

Also, another question regarding the 10.4.x install on the E520 (and I've asked elsewhere), how in the world can I get the higher SATA devices to be recognized? It recognizes my SATA-0 and SATA-1, but won't recognize SATA-4 or SATA-5 (SATA-2 and SATA-3 don't exist). Does ANYONE have a fix for this? Someone suggested that maybe even though they're all on-board, perhaps they're different manufactures? Please help!

USE THE UPHUCK 10.4.9 v1.4i r3 disk!!!!!!! It is THE BEST PATCHED DISK FOR E520!!!!! Kalyway & mac.nub.sh*t are {censored}. Yes they say 10.4.10, but kalyway is actually based on an older release. If you really want your comp to say .10, just look at my other post - which shows you how to trick the system into thinking its upgraded. With this disk I have all SATA recognised. Thats right, ALL!!! TEN PEOPLE HAVE ASKED ME THIS SAME QUESTION!!!! USE UPHUCK!!!

Ok, for those with root device woes:

On initial install, you must use the hard disk that came with your dell when u bought it. It will only work if you change your BIOS back to default setting (THAT MEANS YOU ARIAN), and try again using your original hard drive. If you MUST put os x on a seperate hard disk, put all your other stuff on the other disks and use THE ORIGINAL HARD DISK INSTALLED BY DELL for OS X. THIS WILL SOLVE ALL YOUR ROOT DEVICE PROBLEMS.

IMPORTANT - Reset BIOS to default!!!

REMEMBER - YOU ARE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL AN OPERATING SYSTEM THAT WAS NOT DESIGNED FOR A PC, IN FACT, IT WAS DESIGNED TO NOT RUN ON A PC! MACS DON'T EVEN HAVE BIOS, AND THEY DEFINATLY DON'T SUPPORT DELL HARDWARE (lol)! IF YOU HAVE NEVER INSTALLED OS X THE CONVENTIONAL WAY, AS LAYED OUT FOR YOU IN THE FIRST POST, WHY ARE YOU DI*KING AROUND WITH SATA-5, WEIRD BIOS CONFIGURATIONS & EXTERNAL DISKS!

On to Leopard...

FOR ALL THOSE WHO WANT LEOPARD ON THEIR DELL E520's:

Their is currently no patched leo disk that will work with this dell box, as OS X pretty much hates the intel g965 chipset in the e520. It took a while to get this patched properly in tiger. This means someone who developed the patch (uphuck team - located in turkey), or at least an individual who knows which kexts and packages specifically where used to overcome this issue in Tiger, takes the time to extract said kexts and packages from the disk via Pacifist, then adds all this new stuff into a new patched leo disk, along with all the usual nips & tucks needed to get Leo patched for the PC.

SO, RIGHT NOW THERE IS NO WAY TO BEAT THE ROOT DEVICE ERROR WITH LEO, BUT IF SOMEONE COULD DIVULDGE THE INFORMATION NEEDED OR OFFER THEIR SERVICES AS MENTIONED ABOVE, WE MAY BE ABLE TO GET SOMETHING GOING. ANY TAKERS???

I can also confirm that the macdotnub version 10.4.10 DOES work natively on the E520. Has anyone here successfully upgraded to Leopard on the E520?

Yes, I got it to work.

Here is how:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=510839

TheDude9, i decided to follow your tutorial instead of wmarsh's for Leopard. I am having a little bit of difficulty, where I think it stems from is step 17:

"Now exit GParted. Then double-click the red-X box. Select eject and reboot. Your disk will come out. Switch it with the Uphuck disk and close the tray.

Gparted will do some stuff and your computer will reboot."

I have tried this three times thus far and never saw a red-X box or had an option to eject and reboot. Is it possible that I have a bad version of GParted? I manually rebooted and successfully installed Uphuck OS X, but my computer hangs after reboot. In disk untilities the Partition scheme is not Fat32, it is GUID something. Should I try downloading a different version of GParted?

Good choice. Wmarsh's guide is very "beta" and hard for people new to this stuff to follow. Your version of Gparted is not "bad," just a little different. It is fine for you to just reboot and insert the OS X disk from there. The way I described is from the latest version of Gpared, and simply uses a graphical user interface. Your problem stems from the fact the your HD is not correctly configured. You cannot have a GUID scheme, it won't work. You must use a regular windows-esque scheme. To do this, go to gparted and try to find the disk label option. I'm not sure where it is exactly as your gparted GUI may vary from mine. Then let it set the disk label with the default option (DOS). I explained this in detail in the email I just sent you. Also, you must make sure you set the OS X partiton as "boot" using the manage flags tool in gparted BEFORE YOU INSTALL. This should get things working for you. Also, changing the disk label will wipe the HD, so be warned.

Thanks thedude9,I did try in my E520 and it did NOT work  I have additional SATA HDD attached and also External USB IDE Hdd.I tried with both and it didn't work. 'No root device can be found'In BIOS I have disabled my inital SATA HDD that came with PC (Windows)I will try the Kalyway and see how it goes...Cheers
Why? Please use the Uphuck, and please reset your BIOS, and please use th 1st HD, the one that came with it from Dell. Later you will be able to use the other HD's but you can't install the main system on them. If you do these 3 things, it will work.

I'm having trouble getting the eithernet working. I have that zip file, I extracted it, and I put the file in the extensions folder, and then I did that big command, but I don't have the internet yet... I already had trouble with sound, I got the hda patcher and dragged and dropped the sigmatel text on to the patcher and it did everything for me, you said to take an alc and the sigmatel kexts which i didnt know what kind of kexts u were talking about and put them in extensions, it made no sense to me, neither does this eithernet.... That thread with this IOPCCardFamily.kext says to do some dmesg | grep PC command... plus at the end you said to repeat with the eithernet kext and you forgot the IO when you spelled it, i first thought u meant this file i didnt have... and that IONetworkingFamily.kext from the networking list, the title was IONetworkingFamily.kext from 10.4.8, i though you meant the one under system....

im just really confused and eithernet isnt working, can you tell me the EXACT way to getting eithernet without skipping any steps and remembering to tell me how to set it up at the end??? thanks!

Hello Ace:

WTF? At the top, under "What you need" it clearly states you need sigmatel driver kexts (ALC, HDA) and IOPCCardFamily.kext. It even gives you links to where you can download them. Maybe you should read the whole guide before YOU post you retard. Also, how do you confuse IOPCCardFamily.kext with IONetworkingFamily.kext, even with no IO in front of it? If you don't even have basic reading comprehention skills, you should probably stick to your coloring books rather then attempt to put OS X on your PC. Just to UNconfuse you, IOPCCardFamily.kext is to make 3rd party PCI cards work, like a firewire card. The kext that makes the ethenet work is the one you checked off during install. There is no configuring (other then normal setup, like ISP info, ect) and definatly no terminal commands. It seems to be hit-or-miss with the E520. If you want guarenteed ethernet, get a PCI ethernet card that uses a Tulip chipset, then install tulip.kext. Or use Windows you dickhead.

Jeez - I understand you're inexperienced at this, that's fine, but it fuc*ing pisses me off when noobs like you get bitchy at contributors. Go fuc* off, read the whole post, then shake your head. Do you think I get paid to write a guide and hold your hand through the whole process of installing? The least you can do is be polite.

Your post gave me no information whatsoever. First of all, the links to the downloads do not work, this was posted before that thread was even made. And the thread clearly states the poor guy had his computer hacked and all his stuff was destroyed including his thread and the downloads on it. He is reposting everything, but don't expect me to go look for an hda patcher thats a kext and also an application that does it for you, the kexts I searched and searched and searched for and finally found didn't have any effect on sound and the hda patcher didn't work because that post only had a link to the hda patcher for leopard, I finally found the right hda patcher and it worked, but the IOPCCardFamily.kext and IONetworkingFamily.kext also did not work but a few days earlier before seeing this thread to convince me into trying OSX86 again, I ordered a NIC, and as I was posting that post before, the mailman pulled up on the road, and when I clicked Add Reply, the guy was delivering our mail and I saw a yellow envelope and thought maybe thats it, so I went down to the garage, and sure enough, it wasn't it, the white small box next to it was! So I went go trying that and since inserting cards is so easy these days you don't even need a screwdriver, I had it installed in 3 minutes. I rebooted and Safari couldn't find livepages.apple.com, I was sad, I tryed the Internet Assistant, and as soon as I did that and I was going right through the wizard, it said it was unsupported and I saw Safari refreshed the page and took it to the homepage in Safari and I looked and the lights in the wizard sidebar were all green! I exited the wizard and it was working! So your point is right, dells don't require much to anything at all to run OSX86. Next is Christmas getting my 4 GB RAM Memory and Q6600 and by that time, Iatkos will be released, and I can install it and use EFI and the Vanilla kernal finally instead of that piece of {censored} Speedstep kernal I am using right now sadly! :P:D

thedude9,Can you think of a reason that the same installation process would not work on the cheaper Celeron D e520 ?Thanks for the nice, detailed how-to.MJF
The celeron D is still an intel architecture, so it may work. Everything is the same except for the processor. The trouble is, macs are made exclusivly for the Core 2's. The uphuck release of tiger includes patches for AMD and other intel cpus, but i would check this forum or the one at uphuck.com to see if your processor is supported upder uphuck 1.4i r3 specifically.

Hey! Ur guide is awesome, but I keep getting the device issues. I reset my BIOS, formatted w/ GParted, everything, but it wont go. i continue to get "still waiting for root device". DO i need to remove everything in PCI (my Firewire, ATI X1550, and Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty?)
